#superbowl58 It's hard to believe I have watched every #superbowl game to-date starting when I held a football in my arms as a kid. Over the years, I watched my team the Giants win four championships (2 over the #Goat). The game has changed from an event between a traditional #nfl league and a start-up #afl that eventually merged to one league after the start-up won Super Bowl 3 and 4. Today, it is big business with a week long build-up, advertising, sponsors, celebrities, entertainers and lots of security. To produce this game and broadcast it world-wide, we will see tremendous amounts of #innovation. There are many parallels to our business that can be made.. How a #startup league disrupted the NFL.. How struggling teams #transform their performance. How investments in strong teams make them stronger. #technology and #innovation play a key role in this global event.. Fans don’t buy tickets, they buy the perceived value a ticket unlocks. There are two main drivers of value. 1) winning 2) experience Both are expensive investments, but experience is a more controllable function. Teams that invest in winning don’t always win games, but teams that invest in experience are in prime position to capitalize in an outsized way when team performance is there. And when things aren’t going well there’s a floor experience sets that can stabilize the organization to then capitalize when performance catches back up. Team performance solves a lot of business performance problems, but also creates a lot of problems if the business relies more on winning than fan experience to drive consumer value. #sportsbiz #linkedinsports
