It is incredibly exciting to see tangible progress in the electronic exchange of case reports through Epic Nexus and TEFCA, proving that electronic exchange between health systems and public health is not only possible, but scalable and achievable within this framework for #interoperability.
On July 1, 2024, the first two public health use cases – eCR and individual query – for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) went live! Through TEFCA, there is universal governance, policy, and a technical floor for nationwide interoperability. Individual Query use case – Maryland, Alaska and Fairfax County, Virginia, CRISP Shared Services, and local health information exchanges. eCR use case– Epic, eHealth Exchange, APHL - Association of Public Health Laboratories along with organizations and public health authorities: Washington State, Georgia, Indiana, Wyoming, Texas, and Oregon. CDC is delighted to see the coordination between key partners in health care, public health and local public health authorities – a milestone on the CDC’s Public Health Data Strategy. Agree 100% that a well-integrated, coordinated, and adequately resourced public health and clinical healthcare system is critical. But until we, as a nation, address the upstream drivers of poor health outcomes in the US, state and local public health and healthcare systems alike will continue to be inundated by downstream effects of our policies and funding priorities.
Excited to share our NEJM Group piece on integrating public health and health care. We outline 3 foundational components for protecting health as a team sport: 1) Public health and health care data connectivity 2) Aligned priorities to make shared investments 3) Clear roles and responsibilities with shared accountability We describe collaborative efforts that CDC is leading with health care partners to promote readiness and response, combat the overdose and mental health crises, and support young families. #PublicHealth is about striving to achieve population and individual optimal health through incident surveilance, (not a scary word in this context) preventive opportunities, health awareness and direct care. AcademyHealth #HdPalooza 2024 is an opportunity to hear and talk with some of the most respected persons in the area of Public Health; scientists, researchers, implementers and policy makers all. Register Today https://lnkd.in/g4KAhUcg to attend one of the top 'must attend' conferences of 2024 -especially if you have interest in learning more about Public Health. Misinformation is rampant today, reliable health evidence can be challenging for the average person to find while the health of our communities, our Nation and the World deserve better healthcare and better outcomes. I have been involved with Public Health – Seattle & King County for years and understand the importance of optimal health for myself, the communities - #AllofUs. An alliance between medicine and public health to safeguard the health of our nation and its citizens is long overdue and urgently needed. As an aside, the authors of this NEJM Perspective are three of my favorite people!
