It's #RefugeeWeek, so we're looking back to a conversation with Prof Federico Faloppa who told us about the the impact of being named a University of Sanctuary. Over recent weeks, the Vice-Chancellor has committed to doubling our support for scholarships to help asylum seeker students; to find new ways to support research into the environmental impacts of war; and in seeking to strengthen our longstanding association with the Council for At-Risk Academics, CARA. This is an important acknowledgement from the University of Manitoba. I also hope this serves as the beginning of a broader conversation about decolonizing informed consent and ethics processes in academia and academic research that must honour people we work with, their customs, their ways of being, their agency, autonomy, self-determination, and are trauma informed as opposed to (in some instances) bureaucratic mechanisms for consideration of just legal liability of institutions rooted in euro-centric approaches. I look forward to many discussions on the topic over the months and years to come. #traumaawareness #informedconsent #impactassessment
Today was a heavy and important day for our university. UM has formally apologized for the actions of its community members who, starting in the 1890s, desecrated Indigenous graves and mishandled their remains. And over the past 130 years, UM has also accepted stewardship of Indigenous Ancestors and belongings and we taught with, displayed and studied these ancestral remains and belongings without consent from First Nations, Inuit and Métis families, communities and Nations. We dehumanized Indigenous Peoples to justify our behavior and failed to recognize their sovereignty and dignity. The University of Manitoba did not live up to its ideals in their true form and today we apologized for these past wrongs and atone for these failures. This university wants to be in the right relationship with Indigenous communities of Turtle Island and we are committed to transforming our institution so that we can truly be a university for Manitoba. https://lnkd.in/erRsvAuY

To all NunatuKavut Inuit…please review and share. Your feedback matters. MUN, or any other university, has NO role in arbitrating Indigeneity. Imagine a world where universities try to uphold the same colonial policies that have always sought to get rid of Indigenous peoples in the first place. I’ve written a short article that was published in Canadian Policy options around what is happening in some universities and that directly impacts our students (past, present, future), faculty and staff. I encourage you to read that as well. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning. - Jiddu Krishnamurti
Our current predicament is marked by a desire for quick fixes that make us feel and look good, but these solutions fail to address the root causes of our crises. What can education do in such a context. If education has been part of the problem, what kind of education could help us navigate towards a different form of coexistence? In this talk by Vanessa Andreotti, the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia on Vancouver Island, with Nate Hagens she offers profound insights into this question.
