Over recent weeks, the Vice-Chancellor has committed to doubling our support for scholarships to help asylum seeker students; to find new ways to support research into the environmental impacts of war; and in seeking to strengthen our longstanding association with the Council for At-Risk Academics, CARA. This is an important acknowledgement from the University of Manitoba. I also hope this serves as the beginning of a broader conversation about decolonizing informed consent and ethics processes in academia and academic research that must honour people we work with, their customs, their ways of being, their agency, autonomy, self-determination, and are trauma informed as opposed to (in some instances) bureaucratic mechanisms for consideration of just legal liability of institutions rooted in euro-centric approaches.
