💧Water, Legacy, and the Power of Community:
The Story of Seneca Village and Tanner’s Spring at Central Park ⛲️🌳 NYC
What does water represent to a community?
For the residents of Seneca Village in the early 1800s, it was far more than a resource—it symbolised survival, freedom, and growth. Established by free African Americans escaping the harsh realities of lower Manhattan, Seneca Village blossomed into a thriving community, built on resilience and hope. Homes, schools, churches—places that fostered unity and belonging in a city that often excluded them.
By 1880, the story shifted to Tanner’s Spring. Dr Henry Samuel Tanner’s famous 40-day fast, sustained solely by the spring’s “pure” water, captivated the nation 🇺🇸
The spring became synonymous with health and wellbeing drawing people to its life-giving promise.
These histories pose a profound question: How does water shape not only the land but also the identities and futures of those who gather around it?

It can take 6 to 10 years for a development to gain approval for construction. California Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) aims to streamline environmental and planning processes for approving affordable housing developments. Hopefully approvals can go through within one year or less.

The research is clear: mixed-income housing is key to upLifting Orlando. 📊
70% of young adult Americans said that it was harder for them to afford a home than it was for their parents’ generation.
In October 2021, about half of Americans (49%) said this was a major problem where they live—and this is up 10 percentage points from early 2018.
Affording a home is now an American challenge; we need one another to learn how to handle this challenge best.
For over a decade, Lift Orlando has been working with residents to create mixed-income housing opportunities, bringing beautiful homes to places like Pendana at West Lakes and Pendana Senior Residences. Both were created thanks to our phenomenal partner Columbia Residential.
You can upLift your neighbor with Lift Orlando, too.
