Honoring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the lasting impacts and the ongoing journey toward healing and reconciliation with Indigenous communities. In the field of vocational rehabilitation, this day holds particular significance. Our work is rooted in helping individuals reclaim their lives, rebuild skills, and find purpose through meaningful employment. For Indigenous Peoples, vocational rehabilitation must go beyond traditional models to incorporate culturally relevant services that honor their histories, strengths, and perspectives. We have a responsibility to ensure that our services are inclusive and respectful of Indigenous healing practices and career pathways. This includes actively engaging with Indigenous clients and communities to offer vocational supports that recognize their unique needs, and to foster opportunities for economic empowerment and self-determination. As we reflect today, let’s commit to continuing our learning, listening, and acting in ways that contribute to a future built on respect, understanding, and equity for all Indigenous Peoples. #TruthAndReconciliation #VocationalRehabilitation #IndigenousCommunities #InclusiveWorkplaces #CulturalRespect #EconomicEmpowerment

I've spent much of my career trying to read and reshape the signals in complex service systems. It’s an ultimately imperfect and humbling pursuit: try to put your arms around imperceptible complexity to inform a balanced judgement on what’s most likely to work. One metaphor that I come back to that helps me grasp while respecting this complexity is: service systems are like spinning tops on a plate, they spin and bump into each other; such that the job of a policy maker is not just to adjust the settings of one but also to allow for the direction of spin and impact of the others that intersect. Tertiary education, employment and migration. Disability services, education and community inclusion. The relentless momentum of Westminster silos can act like a vortex pulling policy makers deeper inwards. But as I feel that pull I try to remember that the spinning top I’m trying to affect is just one on the plate of our complex, social economy. #publicpolicy #servicedesign

🏆Florida Division on Career Development and Transition (FL DCDT)- Patrick Mulvihill Making a Difference Award 🏆 In 2023, The Grow Group was awarded the Patrick Mulvihill Making a Difference Award for the positive impact garnered by our people-focused employment trainings. Each year, in honor of Patrick Mulvhill who continually demonstrates the qualities of a person making a difference in the lives of persons with disabilities throughout his career and into retirement, the Florida Division on Career Development and Transition through the “The Patrick Mulvihill Making A Difference” award. Here are some reasons why we commit to deepening our commitment to enhancing employment opportunities for all, regardless of life circumstances or physical limitations: 📉At 21.4%, Florida ranks 46th in the nation for the percentage of people with disabilities who are currently working — well below the national average of 25%. 💼Compared to all Florida counties, Hillsborough has the third-highest number of people with disabilities who are unemployed. 🔎Nearly 5,000 Hillsborough residents with hearing, vision, cognitive, and ambulatory disabilities are looking for work, but are unable to obtain or maintain employment. Through Leadership Denver, I learned that the housing crisis in Denver is complex. Our LD ‘23 Housing Group decided to create this awareness video to highlight that this issue affects our neighbors, friends, teachers, and other critical community members. Take a look and please share on your social networks. Learn more about this issue by visiting the resources at the end of the video.
Denver is experiencing a massive and complex housing crisis and many of our critical workers—first responders, teachers, health care workers—can’t afford to live here anymore. We’re shining a spotlight on a group called, "The Missing Middle." Take a few minutes and watch this short video to learn more: https://lnkd.in/g9mY8Mqn This project was created in partnership with Comcast as a service to our Denver community.

Direct support professionals (DSPs) provide indispensable services to older adults and people with disabilities, helping them live independently and pursue and succeed in competitive integrated employment. But for years, the nation has experienced a severe shortage of DSPs. In 2023, the Biden administration recognized the shortage as a crisis and directed federal agencies to collaborate to mitigate it. Explore the new LEAD Center memo, “Attracting Direct Support Professionals: Advancing Career Pathways with Job Quality in Mind,” for policy and practice recommendations to help federal policymakers and stakeholders increase the recruitment, retention and career progression of DSPs. https://lnkd.in/e2bzyxfS

As Black Maternal Health Week comes to a close, let's not let the conversation end. Black women continue to face unacceptable health risks during pregnancy and childbirth. This week, we've seen a powerful movement to raise awareness, but the fight for equity in maternal health is ongoing. Here's how we can keep the momentum going: Educate ourselves: Stay informed about the factors contributing to Black maternal health disparities. Advocate for change: Support policies that address racial bias in healthcare and increase access to quality care for Black mothers. Amplify Black voices: Support Black-led organizations like Black Mamas Matter Alliance (blackmamasmatter.org) and share their perspectives. Hold institutions accountable: Demand transparency and action from healthcare systems to improve outcomes for Black mothers. Together, we can build a future where Black women can experience safe and respectful pregnancies. #ReproductiveJustice #BlackMamasMatter We also invite you to watch a powerful panel discussion we hosted last year about balancing family planning and climbing the career ladder.
