In the fast-paced world of live events, photographers knows the deal:
the scenario changes in the blink of an eye, and you've got to be on your toes.
Unlike having full control over a branding session, live events are all over the place.
It's an exhausting dance of physical and mental gymnastics, trying to capture those fleeting moments of brilliance – a gesture, a look, an expression.
You'd think the trick is to move faster, to match the event's frenetic pace.
But here's the thing:
patience, not speed, is your best friend in these scenarios.
My world involves photographing professional speakers on stage.
Some of them are like track stars, pacing back and forth. Early on, I realized that matching their every move was not the smartest way to create compelling photos.
Instead, I found value in stillness. Planting myself in a strategic spot, I wait for that magic composition – the one where everything aligns just right. I wait for the speaker to hit that sweet spot in the frame.
Then, it's go-time.
I shoot a burst, capturing a range of movement, ensuring that there's at least a handful that are just right and in focus.
And then, once I’m satisfied with the results, I get up and move to another spot. Rinse and repeat that several dozen times over the course of a 60-minute presentation.
This approach isn’t about being lazy, it's about being smart. By slowing down, you actually speed up productivity.
You give yourself the chance to observe, anticipate and capture a variety of moments that truly reflect the essence of the speaker and the event.
Long story short, don't exhaust yourself running around the space without intention.
Find a good spot, hold your ground, and let the moments come to you.
Be patient and ready to capture the magic when it unfolds. And then, get up and move to the next vantage point.
This is how you craft a portfolio of high-quality images that offer tremendous value to your clients and their marketing teams.
Remember, in the chaos of live events, patience isn’t just a virtue, it’s your secret weapon.
