Drinkaware asked me how I'd support others on their journey to sobriety - and it got me thinking: it's all about the re-frame baby. My biggest takeaway from what I've learned on my sober journey so far is re-framing your decision to stop drinking; rather than seeing it as 'missing out', see it as 'opting in' to a clearer mind, healthier body and more time in your day. On a super practical level, in the early days, you might want to avoid the pub - but as you feel better, you can easily be in the pub and no longer crave what went before. I also recommend buying the alcohol free alternatives, for many of us, alcohol is a habit, so if we replace the habit with all the ceremony of cracking open a can / bottle, but without the headache and hangziety - winner winner no-more-crisps-in-the-pub-for-dinner. #alcoholfree #boozefree #sobriety #reframe #optin

These are all great reminders that I wanted to pass on! We’re heading into the darkest days of winter - it’s important to self care, even if that’s just getting one thing done in a day. DEPRESSION TIPS: Shower. Not a bath, a shower. Use water as hot or cold as you like. You don’t even need to wash. Just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. Sit on the floor if you gotta. Moisturize everything. Use whatever lotion you like. Unscented? Dollar store lotion? Fancy 48 hour lotion that makes you smell like a field of wildflowers? Use whatever you want, and use it all over your entire dermis. Put on clean, comfortable clothes. Put on your favorite underwear. Those ridiculous boxers you bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? Put them on. Drink cold water. Use ice. If you want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost. Clean something. Doesn’t have to be anything big. Organize one drawer of a desk. Wash five dirty dishes. Do a load of laundry. Scrub the bathroom sink. Blast music. Listen to something upbeat and dancey and loud, something that’s got lots of energy. Sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both. Make food. Don’t just grab a granola bar to munch. Take the time and make food. Even if it’s ramen. Add something special to it, like a soft boiled egg or some veggies. Prepare food, it tastes way better, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something. Make something. Write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. Even if you don’t think you’re good at it. Create. Go outside. Take a walk. Bundle up if you have too. Listen to whatever birds winter where you are, watch the squirrels, admire whatever lights are in the trees. Go to the mailbox, send a letter, a bill, a card. Call someone. Call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. Talk to a stranger on the street. Have a conversation and listen to someone’s voice. If you can’t bring yourself to call, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. Even if you don’t say much, listen to them. It helps. Cuddle your pets if you have them/can cuddle them. Take pictures of them. Talk to them. Tell them how you feel, about your favorite movie, a new game coming out, anything. May seem small or silly to some, but this list keeps people alive. *** At your absolute best you won’t be good enough for the wrong people. But at your worst, you’ll still be worth it to the right ones. Remember that. Keep holding on. *** In case nobody has told you today, you are worth your weight and then some in gold, so be kind to yourself and most of all keep pushing on!!!! According to the National Retail Federation, well over $20 billion dollars was spent on Valentine's Day in the U.S. last year. It is the florist's biggest day of the year. Hallmark says only Christmas cards are sold more than Valentine Cards. Jewelry is purchased, and loads of reservations are made at restaurants. A few billion are even spent on pets. February is also American Heart Month. Its purpose is to bring awareness to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S. The cost to the healthcare system is substantially higher than Valentine's Day, not to mention the cost of a life is priceless. What better way to express love than to literally take care of your heart? Coronary artery disease is the most common heart disease. It happens when plaque builds up inside the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart, which can cause the flow of blood to decrease or cut off. The heart is a muscle. If it doesn't get enough blood, it can cause a heart attack. There can be obvious signs of a heart attack, like severe pain or tightness in the chest. But symptoms are often much more subtle like discomfort in your arm, neck, jaw, back, & shortness of breath. Heart attacks require CPR or a defibrillator to shock the heart to get it pumping again. According to the CDC, half of Americans who have heart attacks have at least one of these conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smokers. Granted, there are things you can not control, like age, family history, and certain medical conditions. However, lifestyle is a factor that can be adjusted to decrease the risks of heart disease. It requires taking action, like making changes to your diet, quitting smoking, and managing your blood pressure. Some of the nutritional lifestyle changes to consider include controlling portion sizes; incorporating whole grains over processed foods; products, limiting limiting whole milk, unhealthy unhealthy cream, lat, fats, cakes like and those that cookies; cnokies: come and and from limiting animal sodium from processed meats, frozen and canned foods, and restaurant dIshes.
