Keeping the refrigeration systems properly maintained in our turkey and pork plants is critical to our daily operations. And employee training is one tool that helps us be our best in this area. Earlier this month, Alton Locklear and Josue Sorto of the Prestage Foods turkey plant in North Carolina spent their work week engaged in ammonia refrigeration operator training at Sampson Community College. With both classroom instruction and hands-on lab training, Alton and Josue were able to learn more about what it takes to successfully operate a refrigeration system. At Prestage, we are grateful to have access to SCC ‘s operator training program and instructor Fran Leerkes who has over 42 years experience in food industry engineering and maintenance.

A QUESTION FOR CEOs MANAGERS, SAFETY PROFESSIONALS, SUPERVISORS AND OTHERS This post had a question for managers and corporate positions on how they ensured adequate personal knowledge in the area of OHS. No one offered what they do to verify competence in this area. I will be doing a seperate post on why beard/respirator combos are seen where employers do not enforce the most basic of respiratory protection requirements sometime soon and would appreciate different views. So today, let's try this question to any and all Linkedin members instead. Why would any employer allow bearded individuals to walk around their workplaces with half mask respirator as we see in this post? If anyone thinks the bearded individual being in an area where respirators are required has relevance, would like to learn about that as well. Surely we who are safety professionals can't be afraid to share our thoughts on why. It is common knowledge that a beard is not permitted with such a respirator, the breech is right there in the open. A beard sticking out around a respirator is hard to miss. Some suggest it is because unlike industrial incident injuries which have to be dealt with immediately, Occupational illness injuries often take years to appear and often do not need to be dealt with by that employer. Is it a reluctance to mandate compliance, fear of issuing corrective actions, or perhaps blatant disregard, a lack of care, or conscious disregard for legal requirements and employee well being? What could it be? Why do you think some employers do not enforce highly visible hazards such as beard/respirator combos in their workplaces? Thanks for any comments you may post. #ohssafety #legal #ceotalks #safetyprofessionals #supervision #supervisors #mine #managerialskills #employeesafety #employeeexperience #reprisal
It was a great week at EGA (Emirates Global Aluminum) doing Rate Your State training with supervisors and employees. It’s been a long time since I’ve worn FRC. Takes me back to when I started so “many moons ago” wandering around sawmills, oil rigs, steel plants, pulp and paper mills and power plants doing behaviour safety observations. Don’t get me wrong: I like being on stage talking to the big crowds and signing books. But this is where the “rubber meets the road”, and you get to see if the employees can relate the states to the critical error reduction techniques, like when he said fatigue was his worst state and he identified self-triggering…
