So, I love that we are in The Times today and on my pet subject - of #polarisation. I would have liked them to use the phrase 'work behaviour specialists byrne·dean' (which is how we are styling ourselves), and I'm not at all sleighted that they interviewed me and the wonderful Sophie Clifford and it's Sophie who gets the byline (along with numerous academic/industry titans). I think the quote they have picked probably needs some explaining: I'm not sure it is the (harassment and bullying) policies themselves that are the problem when it comes to policing conversations about politics etc in the office. The point we were making about our clients #harassment policies is that they are often of limited use because their definition of harassment is so broad as to cover virtually all behaviour - because it may offend. I think that what employers need to do is to be far clearer with people about what is expected of them in terms of how they interact with colleagues. I wouldn't advocate banning particular subjects, but I do want it to be clear and understood that upsetting your colleagues is a transgression of policies and something to be avoided. I think that in connection with work social media channels like Slack, those messages need to be really clear. #Bullying and harassment can so easily happen in that arena. I've been struck this week by how this stuff plays out in real workplaces. Because people are prompted by social media to see '#theotherside' as bad, they assume that someone who has liked a post on LinkedIn or wherever that supports 'the other side', they will almost certainly discriminate against me in our workplace - because they are on 'the other side'. That's just not how people (or workplaces) work. The world is not black and white. So much to say on this subject. With #kindness.
