I remember back in school how I always say a friend of mine is allergic to milk. Well, she did say she is lactose intolerant but since milk is one of the major allergens, trust me to consider that as her being allergic to milk 😅 In this part of our world, I've heard so many people talk about being allergic to this, being allergic to that. But in the real sense, they aren't. Looking closely, I've found out that most people either • do not like that particular food based on appearance, aroma, etc. Or • experience certain body reactions after consuming such food. (I used to be a member of this group 🤣) Basically, allergen is a substance that can cause an allergic reaction in susceptible persons. According to FDA (Food and Drug Administration), these are the major types of food allergens: • Milk • Eggs • Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod) • Crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp) • Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans) • Peanuts • Wheat • Soybeans While food allergy can cause mild or severe symptoms, could even be life threatening, food intolerance causes less serious symptoms. This is more reason it is important for food production/manufacturing companies to give allergen statements on every food product produced or processed that could cause allergic reactions.
