Setting new year resolutions doesn't come easy to me (mostly because I am a perfectionist with a tendency to overcommit and overwhelm myself), but I would rather instead take the time to reflect and readjust on core areas of growth that need attention in the coming year, as opposed to feeling the pressure to build a list bigger than my weekly shopping. 2023 absolutely flew by. It had its wonderful moments, full of joy and excitement. But I spent a lot of the time confused, overwhelmed, dissatisfied and unfocused. I've identified two key things to refocus for this year: •Giving back and getting involved with community and putting myself in situations/learning opportunities I wouldn't have otherwise explored inside my comfort zone. •Taking more time in rediscovering my 'Self', what hobbies, interests and experiences bring me joy and help me balance? What boundaries are needed to do this? In the spirit of community and professional growth, I'm excited and nervous to: 🏳️🌈 Join the Banyule City Council LGBTQIA+ advisory committee, as a younger person, renting, with lived experience and other intersecting identities, to advise council on the experiences of their programs and offerings for LGBTQ+ people. 📚 Further educate myself on the systemic barriers to equal participation that exists for disabled, Deaf and neurodivergent people across Australia. Pictured is the recent report from the Royal Commission into the Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability as my starting point. 🏘 Participate in the Safe and Equal accredited 10-week course 'Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence' as part of my role in diversity, equity, and inclusion with career aspirations to be doing more to prevent violence in our community, and to support people experiencing family violence. 2024 will also bring more intentional and protected moments for resetting and finding space. As we step into July, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the various DEI events happening this month. Recognizing and honoring the diverse communities and demographics that make up our society is not just a gesture—it's a commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable world. July is packed with significant observances that remind us of the importance of embracing diversity and promoting inclusion: Disability Pride Month: Celebrating the accomplishments, contributions, and pride of people with disabilities. It’s a time to advocate for more accessibility and inclusion in all areas of life. International Non-Binary People's Day (July 14): A day to recognize and celebrate non-binary individuals, promoting understanding and acceptance of all gender identities. Nelson Mandela International Day (July 18): Honoring the legacy of Nelson Mandela, this day encourages us to reflect on the values of freedom, justice, and equality, and to take action to make the world a better place. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month: Highlighting the mental health challenges faced by minority communities and promoting awareness, resources, and support. BIPOC Mental Health Month: Focusing on the mental health needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities, this observance emphasizes the importance of culturally competent care and resources.
