On November 9, industry media outlet TechWeb posted that this week the French Senate passed new legislation that would require all parking lots with at least 80 spaces to be equipped with solar panels, whether existing or new. This new regulation is part of France's massive plan to invest massively in renewable energy, which aims to increase the country's solar power generation by 10 times and double the amount of power generated by onshore wind farms. Starting July 1, 2023, small parking lots with 80 to 400 spaces will have five years to reach the new regulations, and parking lots with more than 400 spaces will need to do so within three years and have at least half of their parking area covered with solar panels, the report said. The program is aimed at large parking lots around commercial centers and train stations, and could generate up to 11GW of electricity, the equivalent of 10 nuclear reactors, to power millions of homes.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has been collecting data on the public energy sector R&D budgets of its 31 member countries for nearly five decades. Those data are public, and they tell many stories. The topline: member countries now devote more public dollars to energy R&D than ever before in real (not nominal) terms, but that's only after building back to levels previously seen only in the late 1970s and early 1980s. the sub-lines: energy efficiency is now the single biggest recipient of R&D, dethroning but nuclear power and renewables. Hydrogen dollars are growing rapidly. Fossil energy R&D is fairly paltry, and that includes carbon capture and storage. My thoughts: expect all of these numbers to move up again given government attention and general funding for energy innovation. Blink and you may have missed it. With much of the coverage of GenCost focusing on the costs of nuclear energy, an important finding may have been overlooked that has the potential to unlock the deployment of a renewable technology that is ideally placed to replace retiring coal plants, such as Eraring, and help make Australia a renewable and manufacturing superpower. GenCost shows that solar thermal power has the lowest levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of any ‘flexible load, low emission’ technology, that it is cheaper than gas peaking plants, and comparable to coal-fired plants even without a cost on carbon. Put another way, this is a technology available today with the same characteristics of dispatchability, synchronous generation and system strength benefits as fossil fuel generators but with zero emissions and lower cost of electricity, according to GenCost. #Renewableenergy #Solarfarm #Engineeringelectrical

Im for a low CO2, low cost power future 🙌 - What's the name of this low emission energy asset? I travelled around Australia the last 6 months, and visited lots of our energy assets, we live in a wide open, low populated dry land. Hydro Storage will have a place for dispatch-able power. Green hydrogen and batteries produced by low cost solar, wind, nuclear will have a place for dispatch-able power. Hydro will have a place for network stability introducing intertial power, and for power factor control using synchronous condensers. #hydropower #electricalengineering
