In an era of continued labor shortages, facilities managers play an important role in ensuring that return-to-office (RTO) policies succeed. Employees say they’re willing to make the drive to the office—as long as it offers resources they can’t get at home. Here we outline three ways that you can create a commute-worthy office environment. #BusinessExcellence #FacilitiesManagement https://loom.ly/zHfY7gI Image: In an open office setting, two employees sit on a sofa, talking and looking at a laptop on a small table in front of them.

Dust off your desk and reconnect your headset as workers return to the office in 2024 Finally, the tide seems to be turning as office workers are making their way back into the workplace, rather than remote working. In a recent survey of 1800 workers carried out by Castleforge, a real estate investor, their findings revealed that more than a third of respondents felt isolated at home and over half felt they were more productive in the workplace. When you start to look into the data, this increased significantly when you started to look at the younger respondents, with almost 60% claiming they are more productive in the office. It also found that the office environment was key to feeling positive about returning. Some of the largest global firms including Google and even Zoom are now requiring employees to be in the office for more than 3 days a week. Our team at Axiom have remained office-based and we believe this is the best environment for our staff for many reasons, including the ability to motivate, manage and maintain open communication between the recruiters and the resourcers. Castleforge reported that rather than a reduction in demand, they have seen an increase in rental values, of high-quality office space, by 20% and that employers are looking for convenient well-maintained offices to encourage office workers back to their desks. If you read the announcement yesterday (30/1/23) from the Global CEO of UPS, where they are cutting 12,000 jobs after lengthy negotiations with the unions, she is now ordering workers to return to the office 5 days a week this year. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly’s push to get employees back in the office to “fix” the city’s office market is backward thinking. The pandemic has fundamentally changed work preferences, with many valuing the flexibility of working from home over commuting to an office. Dell’s experience is a prime example: despite the threat of missing out on promotions, nearly half of their full-time workforce chose to keep working remotely. This shows just how much people value flexibility and the new reality of work. And, this is coming from somebody who made an office space planning tool! Space plan based on actual work trends, not outdated notions of office life. Instead of trying to force a return to the old normal, we need to adapt our space needs to reflect today and tomorrow’s work environment. (Or, stay office-first… my tool helps with that too 😉 just don’t say I didn’t warn you if your in-office policy impacts talent attraction and retention)

When looking at return to office we need to ask what is the benefit? Does it increase employee effectiveness or efficiency? Does it build team cohesion or consistency in service delivery. Does it make out employees feel valued or appreciated? Or does it make employees feel distrusted and micromanaged. Does it add stress or inconvenience for minimal benefit. Does the way it is executed deliver the expected team benefit or are people still operating as islands but in a different location? There are definitely use cases for return for office and ways to make it work for your team. But is that how your organisation is using it? Is it thoughtful and deliberate or is it arbitrary and simply to hit occupation metrics to justify real estate costs? Does your organisation and your employees both benefit from its execution?
Is there still a place for physical workspaces in 2024? Office attendance remains 30% below pre-pandemic levels and it’s getting harder for employers to deliver offices that meets workers’ needs. New research explains office spaces are still valuable, but employers should think more carefully about how and when to use them.

Interested in how hybrid work may be affecting the #food service industry? Check out this newly published research from my colleague John McCoy at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City!
Are you a hybrid worker? Fully remote? Fully in-office? A lot of attention has been given to hybrid and remote work policies and the impacts of those policies on company culture, productivity, and impacts that increasingly vacant office buildings might have on commercial lenders and developers. Less attention has been given to the impact that the reduction in office foot traffic has on other businesses near offices, like bars and restaurants. Check out new research from me at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City on potential challenges facing bars and restaurants in office districts around our region! #remotework #hybridwork #commercialrealestate #commuting #kcfed #regionaleconomy https://lnkd.in/giuea-H7

June was a watershed moment for post-pandemic office attendance. That's according to the Office Building Index from location intelligence software company Placer.ai, which found the national average for office attendance was down only 29.4% compared to June 2019. That's the highest post-pandemic recovery rate yet — marking yet another example of how workplace trends around hybrid work are shifting as sentiments of employers and employees evolve. There are signs the in-office momentum is likely to build even stronger in the remainder of 2024 — especially with September typically being marked by a jump in in-office rates. But beyond that, more top executives are expecting a full return to the office for many positions.
The return to the office just hit a big milestone. It may just be the start. - San Francisco Business Times

It just amounts to foolish senior managers trying to justify exorbitant capital expenditures and foolish middle managers scared that many will be exposed as pointless. If you don’t need to work on-site and you are doing your job, it shouldn’t matter. In fact an economically smart manager would try to have as many jobs as possible as remote to reduce expensive overheads like rent, insurance, and utilities.
