Aviation English - the language of the skies, born from the tragedy of Tenerife. 🛫 ✈️ March 27, 1977, marked one of the darkest days in aviation history. At Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, two colossal Boeing 747s, operated by Pan Am and KLM, became entwined in a fatal collision, claiming the lives of 583 people. The chaos unfolded amidst dense fog and congested runways. As Pan Am Flight 1736 taxied down the runway, it collided with the KLM aircraft, Flight 4805, which was attempting to take off. Miscommunication between the pilots and air traffic controllers exacerbated the situation. The KLM captain, believing he had received clearance for takeoff, initiated the manoeuvre while the Pan Am aircraft was still on the runway. Tragically, the collision left no survivors on the KLM flight, and only 61 of the 396 passengers and crew aboard the Pan Am aircraft survived. It remains the deadliest accident in aviation history. The Tenerife disaster served as a wake-up call for the aviation industry. Investigators identified language barriers, ambiguous instructions, and radio interference as contributing factors. In response, Aviation English was developed as a standardized language for air communication, ensuring clarity and precision in the cockpit. Examples of Aviation English terms include: 🆔️Squawk: A transponder code assigned to an aircraft for identification. 📻Pan-Pan: A radio call indicating an urgent situation that is not immediately life-threatening. 🧳Deadhead: A crew member or passenger travelling on a flight for positioning purposes rather than as part of the regular crew or passengers. 🆘️Mayday: A distress call indicating an emergency requiring immediate assistance. Today, the legacy of Tenerife echoes in every cockpit, reminding pilots and air traffic controllers of the critical importance of effective communication. Two part answer…Part 1 It was with interest and melancholy that I read the excellent overview from Brenton Cox of Adelaide Airport the foresight and undertakings they are doing for Adelaide and S.A. More Information is required to achieve success South Australians deserves. Firstly the Govt need to reconsider their support to ensure future growth of our state. The State Govt 24 million investment is negligible when 240 million was provided Queensland Govt as equity to increase international new carriers operating and or additional flights by those flying into Brisbane. The ‘worst kept secret’ is that Adelaide is classified as a secondary tiered airport and virtually anyone..that’s any carrier…can fly into Adelaide tomorrow if they choose too,the catch with a population of just over 2 million (1.771 million in Census 2020 ) albeit AAC is expanding,the Government too must be prepared to Build Better South Australia and must up the ante and provide dollar incentives for Any overseas carrier to call Adelaide home ( or at least a Transit port )
