That could have been one of the areas that went wrong for Fletcher Building in recent years - the number of divisions, managers, CEOs and beauracracy that creates. Investors aren't investing in each division, they are investing in the entire group, so the costly effects from a complex corporate structure are borne by them. It is almost like an externality that is not connected to any specific division or part of the company, but affects the whole.
In addition to the above potential inefficiencies, the convoluted corporate structure appears to be partly a product of history and partly also an attempt to capitalise, over time, on 'rent-seeking' opportunities within the construction industry. So the logic of the structure is/was that it mopped up any extra value that was floating around in and between it's operations. This is a valid strategy in the medium term but is not a coherent overall long term strategy for any company.
Firstly, many other strategic focuses and structures could have been formed instead which promise more sustainable long-term performance opportunities. Innovative structures, sustainability, technological innovation and strategic Joint Ventures are all areas that could protect and enhance long term value for shareholders.
Accumulating business units then selling them off when finances are low is a simplistic strategy followed in the 1980's and 1990's which has less favour today.
We are thrilled to announce Thornton Williams as the new Chief Executive of our Concrete Division. Thornton has been a part of Fletcher Building since 2011 - working across various group functions, including Treasury, Insurance, and Risk before moving into the Concrete Chief Financial Officer role in 2021.
His proven track record of building high-performing teams and driving success aligns perfectly with our goals for the future and his leadership and commitment to our values makes him the perfect fit to lead the future of the Concrete Division.

There are many great companies and partners who make a business of supporting our warfighters, peace keepers and innovators. However, who we are as a company - and how we conduct ourselves - is a key reason why I have spent the last 17+ years of my career and life as a member of Northrop Grumman.
The opportunity to learn and lead with such strong values and commitments to Do The Right Thing and Commit to Shared Success are present and drive what/how our teams deliver everyday.
In my role as executive leader for Sustianability in our Space Systems sector, we are working daily on opportunities to #dotherightthing with “Sustainabilty From The Start” and the role that each member plays - from Earth, to Orbit and Beyond.

Do please read Clarity's Global Crisis & Reputation Report published this week. The report sees some of our senior experts reflecting on some of the biggest issues from the last year, and offering up some key learnings.
One of the biggest outtakes is that reputation requires a multi-channel approach, not least SEO/Organic. It's a fascinating read and highlights the importance of comms and marketing disciplines working work together to enhance and maintain brands’ reputations, and to have a joined up strategy for when crises hit.

First 100 Days at Boeing: Kelly Ortberg's Powerful First Steps as CEO. Kelly Ortberg has just stepped into one of the most challenging CEO roles in corporate America, taking the helm at Boeing during a turbulent time.
In his first day on the job, Ortberg has already made a bold move by relocating his office from Boeing HQ in Virginia to Washington, closer to the front lines of Boeing's commercial aircraft operations. It's there that lack of management presence may have caused one crash after the next.
In my book, Your First 100 Days in a New Executive Role, I emphasize the importance of taking three symbolic actions within the first 72 hours. These actions set the tone for leadership and signal a commitment to the path of greatness.
Kelly has already taken one such step by physically positioning himself where the company needs him most—right in the heart of production. This decision demonstrates his focus on rebuilding trust and tackling the complex challenges facing Boeing head-on.
Ortberg’s choice to be near the factory floor in Renton, Washington, shows that he understands the value of leading from the trenches. It’s a promising start that aligns with the principles I advocate for in any successful leadership transition.
Kelly's next 99 days will be pivotal, and if his first move is any indication, Boeing is on the path to reclaiming its position as an industry leader. Here’s to leadership that doesn’t just talk about change but embodies it from day one.
