There are eight remaining JCPenney stores in the Bay Area - located in City of Antioch, City of Concord, City of Fairfield, California, City of Hayward, City of Pleasanton, City of San Bruno, City of San José and City of Santa Rosa. Recent closures in the Bay Area include the ones in Daly City and Newark, which both closed in 2019. Once upon a time, JCPenney was a staple of many shopping centers across the country. It was one of those big-box retail department stores that seemingly every suburb in America had — in addition to stores like Macy’s and Sears. JCPenney, at one point in 1974, had more than 1,900 total stores across the country, according to Forbes. For retailers like JCPenney and Sears, the glory days — during the 1960s through 1980s when every mall in the county seemed to have either store — now appear to be a distant memory of the past. In May 2020, JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Macy’s announced a new strategy that includes a much smaller footprint and an expansion of its luxury and beauty brands.  The department store giant said it is “focusing resources” by closing approximately 150 underproductive Macy’s locations, including some 50 by the end of 2024, and prioritizing investment in approximately 350 “go-forward” nameplate locations and the continued expansion of small-format stores. In October, Macy’s  said it would open up to 30 small-format, off-mall stores through fall 2025, starting in fall 2024. The company plans to focus more on luxury goods by opening about 15 Bloomingdale’s stores and at least 30 Bluemercury stores during the next three years.  Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury have both outperformed Macy's. #commercialrealestate #retailrealestate #macys #bloomingdales #bluemercury #expansion

I spent yesterday cruising along my old shopping turf (Chicago's Michigan Ave.), looking for examples of in-store experiences going well and those going - not so well. Two standouts 👇 : 🐴 Ralph Lauren (full disclosure - I worked at this location A LONG time ago and I'm a big fan girl) - visiting this store is an EXPERIENCE. 37,000 sq ft draped in old-world wood paneling and oriental rugs, it's akin to visiting a museum - the art is all part of Ralph's personal collection. The RL Restaurant has been a cornerstone of the upscale, see-and-be-seen crowd for a solid two decades now, and the brand recently expanded its reach towards aspirational shoppers by opening up a ground-floor Ralph's Coffee Shop (the place was PACKED on a cold, rainy Thursday afternoon). The window displays are grandiosely detailed in a calculated way that grabs attention, inviting the consumer in for more. Every inch of this store is well thought-out, visiting them is a treat. 🛍 Saks Fifth Avenue - Before I dump on another department store - Saks, I'm rooting for you! This was the place I bought my first luxury item, it holds a special place in my heart. But it was a truly awful experience. Uninspiring window displays, lackluster and unattentive sales staff, shoes strewn all over the footwear section, unbelievably messy bathrooms out of toilet paper, returns on the FOURTH floor. I was honestly shocked by how bad it was. I didn't even bother going all the way up to the top floor to check out the restaurant, it wasn't worth going up 7 flights of escalators. I will not be visiting again any time soon. #retail #luxury #retailinnovation

🔴 Marks & Spencer will open a record number of #stores this month as it ramps up its bet on the high street. The #retailer said it has spent £80m to open a total of nine stores in November. These include six new stores in locations including Birmingham’s Bullring, Manchester’s Trafford Centre and the Lakeside shopping centre in Essex. It is aiming to go from having 247 larger stores that stock #food, #clothing and #homeware products to 180 more productive and higher quality larger #shops. It is also planning to open more than 100 food halls, amid solid demand for #groceries. The changes are expected to save it more than £300m in #rent, it said in a presentation last year. The shake-up in its stores comes as part of a wider turnaround, which in September allowed M&S to return to the FTSE 100 almost four years after it was ejected.
