Interviewing engineers and engineer engagement is the first step in our Leaders Award Competition which asks UK pupils aged 3-19 'If you were an engineer, what would you do?'. On Tuesday 11th March 2025 we will be hosting a live engineer interview with Joseph, an engineering apprentice at Thales as together we dive deep into the world of submarines. Thales UK are a longstanding National Partner on our Leaders Award Competition. From September - March every year we host interviews with engineers, they share how they use creative problem-solving in their work and inspire the pupils to find their own engineering idea plus pupils get to ask the questions that matter to them. This interview is exclusively available to schools and home learners as part of our competition. 👉 Simply log in/register for our competition: https://lnkd.in/ebRXFTsP 👉 Go to resources 👉 RSVP for the webinar Know a school who would love to take part in the competition? ⬆️ This is what an engineer looks like. Engineers come from all backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, bringing with them unique perspectives that drive innovation. Whether in tech, aerospace, healthcare, or energy, this diversity enriches the problem-solving process, leading to more creative, inclusive, and impactful solutions. As engineers, we don’t fit a single mould - and that’s a strength. By embracing diverse ideas, experiences, and talents, we’re building a future where we can truly serve everyone. Rick Blank and Stas Tarchalski, instructors in Johns Hopkins University’s Engineering for Professionals No. 1 ranked online master’s program in Engineering Management, received the 2024 Best Paper Award from the Engineering Management Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) at the society’s annual meeting in June. “Preparing Future Generations for Executive Leadership Roles in Technical Organizations,” focuses on the EM program’s capstone course, Executive Technical Leadership. Subjects covered include how the course integrates fundamental EM topics into an applied experience, how the course has evolved to meet changing industry needs, and the significance of recruiting faculty who are senior executives from industry. At the course’s capstone event—a simulated board meeting where industry guests serve as a board of directors—teams of students acting in the roles of senior technical executives present technical strategy and implementation plans for projects on topics relevant to their careers. “Working professional students learn best through case studies, active learning, and project-based activity,” Blank says. “We prepare students for technical leadership through applied experiences, course work with real-life scenarios, and direct input from industry professionals.” Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/db8RFQ7i

Yesterday I attended the Next Gen Makers Engineering Skills Conference. My takeaways are 1) Frequently the underlying issues aren’t new but the external contexts are 2) People are definitely becoming more values & empowerment driven regarding where they choose to work 3) The use of different wording to resonate better with broader audiences has never been so pertinent 4) The sector needs to get better at being able to re-employ those who’ve taken a career break or want to re-train to become engineers. Many more items came up, too much to list out! #STEM #LearningAndDevelopment #Diversity WISE Katherine Watson
