More than 3300 people have been started on the path to sustainable employment in rail, construction and civils this year by a leading West Midlands training provider NIS Group after accelerating the roll-out of its Transport, Rail and Infrastructure Academy (TRIA) https://lnkd.in/g_pyczys

Together with the National Highways Lean team, the A46 Coventry Junctions, Walsgrave integrated project team has been learning new skills. Facilitated by the Bourton Group LLP we have, over the last year, undertaken training in a robust decision making process called Choosing By Advantages. The Choosing by Advantages (CBA) approach in its modern form was developed by Jim Suhr and described in his book Choosing by Advantages (Greenwood 1999). CBA is an approach that enables organisations, project teams and individuals to make more effective choices using an open, transparent and auditable process. Today we had the opportunity to put this into practice and make a real live project decision. This decision will define a methodology that will now need to be incorporated into our detailed design. Making this decision as early as we have will give us time to work with our supply chain, design partners and stakeholders to consider the intricacies before we start the detailed design. Well done to Barnsley College, T3 Training & Development and my colleagues at Laing O'Rourke for reaching this point. A UK first and not a moment too soon ! This dedicated facility will provide training and skilling in Modern Methods of Construction and will prepare a generation of technicians for rewarding, productive and healthy jobs. As we know, the UK government growth mission, as set out in #invest2035 will place enormous demand on our industry. Across Department for Business and Trade and HM Revenue & Customs consultations and enquiries are currently underway seeking to understand the scale of the skills shortfall and potential solutions. This today is a brilliant example of how business and academia are investing to ensure the skills threat is turned to an opportunity. Modern, agile skills that can respond across the growth sectors and far more productively than ever before. The conclusion of the industrial strategy #invest2035 is seeking to identify the races to back and not the winners. The race to transform our industry has surely got to be the most compelling, if we want to deliver growth, health and dispersed prosperity. Schemes such as Sizewell C, New Hospital Programme, HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd and many more will provide the long term jobs for our technicians of the future.

As of 2024, the sector’s market size is valued at approximately $2.1 trillion, spanning residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. In Pennsylvania, construction employs 258,000 workers, making it one of the states with the highest number of construction jobs in the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Pittsburgh area has launched numerous exciting construction projects, including large-scale infrastructure improvements, commercial developments, and green building initiatives. These types of projects drive regional economic growth and modernize Pennsylvania’s infrastructure. However, the industry is struggling with a challenge. The industry’s challenge The challenge is the shortage of qualified workers. Addressing this gap is essential to meet demand and ensure these projects are completed on time and efficiently. 🌟 Tunnel offers vision for boosting construction skills 🌟 A partnership designed to help overcome training and employment barriers and create a skills legacy linked to the Lower Thames Crossing has launched a training initiative. Highways England has joined forces with Gallagher Group, one of the South East’s premier aggregates, groundworks, civil engineering and property development companies, and Flannery Plant Hire, a leader in UK plant supply and skills bootcamp training, to create the Lower Thames Crossing Skills Hub pilot. Speaking at the launch, Lord Blunkett said: “It’s no secret there is a national shortage of skills across the country which poses a significant challenge to economic growth.
