I don't ever use consultants and probably never will. WHY ? They have NO stake in the game. The opinion of a person who just gets paid VS the opinion of a person/company that has something to lose is a HUGE gap. Example - Consultant get's paid for a recommendation VS an employee who's career is going to be elevated for getting it right are two completely different ways of viewing a problem with an outcome that is more crucial. It is as different as apples VS oranges. Without ownership in a recommendation or the ability to see it thru - you just don't see the depth of the issue. #responsibility #ceomindset #consultants

Follow up to my post on this last week. Freeing up partner time to focus on clients (delivery, quality, service and winning work) is clearly right and will add value, but it should be at the expense of internal management rather than team development. And who is going to do those roles? Could add to indirect costs.

🤓 A cool quadrant on consulting need states I spotted this in *checks notes, oh yeah, where else* Alex Morris' excellent Strat Scraps. And as far as quadrants go, i've seen far worse. In fact, this one's quite good. Because it offers genuine and valid choices across all levels. Most quadrants assume where you want to be is the top right box. But this one introduces a simple idea. That all positions are good, but they bring compromises. Some consultants trade on speed at the expense of everything being right from the get go. Others trade on certainty and confidence even if it comes at some expense of speed. Some get hired because people don't have time to do the work, or don't know how to. Others get hired because clients want a sparring buddy to their own thinking. So far, i'd say my work with Salmon Labs sits on the bottom right corner. I like to work fast and with others, and my clients so far are into this too. When contemplating career plans, we will often ask ourselves: "Which types of work do i like doing the most?" Another potent question worth adding to the mix: "Which ways of working give me the most energy?" ~ Originally posted here: https://buff.ly/45bSqsd

Whenever you are hiring for your team, regardless of whether the vacancy is for a junior or senior role, I always firmly advocate prioritizing attitude and purpose-driven motivation over strictly mandated professional qualifications. And, trust me, it proves more advantageous to integrate someone with a slight deficit in domain experience than to grapple with individuals whose commitment and depth extend no further than surface-level engagements and monetary incentives. #LeadershipLessons #HireMindfully #CultivateTribesNotTeams #InvestInTheWorthy #LeanCanvasApproach
