Access to healthcare services ought to be more prompt than waiting for the waitress to serve your meal at a restaurant. Data suggests that there were 125,572 vacancies (9%) in the NHS between March and June 2023. According to an article published on Mediscpae UK, the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, as reported by NHS England (NHSE), signals a historic commitment to addressing the staffing crisis within the NHS through what is described as "record recruitment" efforts. This plan, met with broad approval from various healthcare organizations, aims to significantly increase the number of trained professionals across a range of disciplines, including doctors, nurses, dentists, and other healthcare staff. Despite the ambitious targets, there remains scepticism among some experts regarding the plan's adequacy in fully resolving the staffing shortages. NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard has framed the initiative as a pivotal chance to establish a durable solution for staffing issues looking forward. NHSE emphasizes a dual approach that includes retaining current employees in addition to initiating the most extensive recruitment drive in the history of the health service. With staffing vacancies currently at 112,000, the plan marks the first instance of NHSE setting long-term workforce projections, anticipating a potential increase in the staffing gap to 360,000 by 2037 due to demographic changes and the advent of new medical treatments. Over the next 15 years, the strategy commits to recruiting and retaining "hundreds of thousands more staff" to combat these challenges and secure the future of the NHS workforce. Reducing Leakage - Key to Financial Success Hospitals and health systems spend millions in support of Primary Care Physicians (PCP) and satellite urgent care programs. Investments in these foundational practices are made to secure referrals to system specialists and profitable services. Yet, most systems see leakage in excess of 40%. Primary Care Physicians and urgent care physicians do not consistently encourage patients to see system specialists and many patients choose options outside of the system. I have written previously about how transitioning to a group practice model for employed practices is the best method to reduce leakage. In the short term, other strategies have proven effective. · Providing same day access to specialists in the same facility · Making appointments with specialists at the time of check out from PCP and urgent care visits. · Communicating with the patient by email and text to confirm the specialty appointment · Establishing a relationship with a navigator to manage complex problems.
