What is NBCU's FAST channel strategy in the US? As the #FAST market matures, major US player, NBCUniversal, have been accelerating their channel offering, having launched 25 new channels since July. NBCU’s recent additions to their US channel lineup have predominantly been in scripted content, which differs from Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2023 strategy of mostly unscripted and reality programming. This shows NBCU's intent to be one of the leading US Studios in the FAST sector, as they continue to grow their channels and commit premium IP to them. Warner Bros. Discovery 3Q23 numbers disappoint again. After lowering EBITDA expectations for 2023 last Q, mgmt hints at lower 2024 EBITDA on the back of an extremely weak #advertising environment. While leverage targets for 2024 (2.5 - 3.0x) were maintained, an element of doubt has creeped in. #streaming Direct To Consumer (DTC) profitability was a bright spot after the combined #hbomax and #discoveryplus launch under the MAX brand in the U.S. with international launch coming in 2024. Subscriber growth should resume then for DTC (96 M subs v >230 M at #netflix and >160 M at #disney ) Among #media names, #warnerbrosdiscovery continues to look attractive at ~5x EV/EBITDA vs. ~ 7x average for peers.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported disappointing quarterly earnings, down 10% in shares, primarily due to underperforming movies like #TheColorPurple and #Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Q4 revenue was $10.28B, below the estimated $10.35B, with a loss of 16 cents per share, exceeding the expected 7 cents loss. Despite challenges in the film sector, the direct-to-consumer segment, including streaming, saw a 3% revenue increase to $2.53B. Free cash flow rose 33% to $3.31B. A look at some decisions that can be avoided which where done by the leadership team. > Buying #warnerbros from #att for 43 Billion $, without a definitive plan. > Removing series from streaming to avoid paying for residuals, throwing out audience favourites. > Writing off content for tax benefits, short term accounts lead thinking. > Turning #hbomax into #max, killing the legacy and customer affiliation to #HBO which was an audience favourite for premium entertainment. > Moving straight to HBO Max movies from theaters, killing the big screen experience. > Shutting down #cnn+, which drove away the new digital native viewership. > Putting too much faith in the movie #TheFlash and selling it as an NFT, bad product with a even worse selling philosophy. > Even trying to merge with #paramount and #comcast, can't wash your sins in disguise of expected value.

💰 After a few years of limiting content to their own platforms, studios are once again eyeing off lucrative licensing deals. According to Ampere Anand, The Walt Disney Company has the most shows that meet the following criteria of having 'licensing power': - The show has completed their first run - There are at least 3 seasons - It is a scripted format - The show is of US origin - It maintains consumer engagement measured with Ampere’s Popularity Score For example, shows like Sons of Anarchy and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fit this criteria. Paramount comes in second with 72 shows including Hawaii Five-0 and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Warner Bros. Discovery lands in third with 54 shows including The Sopranos and The Wire.
