Amazon Ads made their #AmazonUpfront debut yesterday in NYC and it was quite the show! With appearances from Alicia Keys, Roger Federer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, they gave some exciting updates on what's to come from Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Ads. Here are my top 5 highlights: 📈 New records set for original content on Prime Video: 'Rings of Power' S1 attracting 100 million viewers, 'Road House' 80 million, and 'Idea of You' 50 million (after only two weeks since release). ⭐ New content announcements including a Road House sequel, a Legally Blonde 🎀 prequel (named 'Elle'), a Tomb Raider series (written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge), a new comedy film 'You're Cordially Invited' (featuring Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell). 🏈 Expanded investment in live sports, including Thursday Night Football with our first-ever NFL playoff game with a wild-card matchup in January. Prime Vidio is also continuing their commitment to women’s sports with our partnerships with NWSL and WNBA. Discovery’s  joint venture signals more consolidation through bundling, M&A, and partnerships. Apple, Google, and Amazon are currently paving the way among internet-based media. They have inherent advantages due to their existing cloud technology and interoperability capabilities – combined with a tremendous amount of cash to spend aggressively in GenAI, machine learning and content. Our EVP of digital media supply chain, Jon Christian, recently shared with Yahoo Finance that consolidation through M&A or partnerships is key for traditional media players to compete. this is an interesting pickle, why are Amazon's CPMs priced seemingly below the market? The National Football League (NFL) sure didn't charge them less than market price for the Thursday Night Footballs rights, and the $100M extra charge for America's newest "BFF" (Black Friday Football). Netflix has come down from previously stellar heights of $65 when they first brought out their premium inventory to sell against, to a new level, almost half of that. #realitybites indeed. Personally, I will remember what #jeffbezos said and still says about long-term thinking "If we think long term, we can accomplish things that we couldn't otherwise accomplish" Therefore, that is my guess why they are pricing so low. “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.” This is perhaps part of the thinking behind Disney and Warner Bros Discovery’s (WBD) decision to offer their Disney+, Hulu, and Max as a bundle in the US: https://lnkd.in/eFd_P3pd - their enemy being, of course, Netflix. But they are also likely looking at the results Disney - and Amazon and Apple - have seen from similar strategies. Disney’s taken a variety of approaches to bundling. According to Omdia’s estimates, packaging Disney+ with Hulu, ESPN+ and other digital services has proved one of the most popular, with such “co-subscription” plans accounting for one in four of its bundled online video subs. For Apple, that share’s ~25% thanks to its Apple One bundle of Apple-branded TV, music, games, news, fitness and cloud storage services. For Amazon, it’s as high as ~85% because of its free shipping-anchored Prime plan. (Please note: those shares cover only the providers’ bundled subs, NOT their totals. That kind of insight into the overall effectiveness of bundling is only available to Omdia clients!) Great insights Jon Christian - 100% agree that the key is to start with reducing friction to give the consumer what they want, when they want it and how they want to watch it. Indeed, this starts with the rights holder evaluating all available licensing alternatives and selecting the right partners to deliver the content that we all love to watch. Charting a course to maximize licensing revenue while optimizing the digital media supply chain to deliver next-gen broadcast experiences - this is what we do. It is amazing to have a front row seat..!
