Ag Meme Monday and also Two birds with one stone with a thread 👇: I wrote my latest Easy Observations newsletter edition last week around my crazily popular post of last week around John Deere’s dominance in the the OEM side of the #Agtech world. Close to 400 likes and 35k impressions! Wild.
Anyway, I didn’t share that link out (below) on here yet and thought I’d do that while showcasing one of my memes from that as well (it’s one of my favorites as I’m a big Rick and Morty fan).
To elaborate around it as I typically do, here is the skinny… By far the JD Operations Center is the most integrated API via all 3rd party farm management information systems (FMIS). Its the number one want by all and is first to be done. Their competitors wish they had a smidgeon of that.
What I find comical in it all is that we’ve collectively done all the work for Deere in connecting every corner of Ag. Yes they got this through being the most popular and it being free, but you can’t tell me that there’s also an odd feeling around doing that for them.
In a sense they forced it upon us other 3rd parties as it became a necessity to do business with the growers that had their equipment which is a big majority. I’m not saying it was nefarious, just that you had to and they knew this.
While many benefit from the connection, JD benefits the most as now they have a digital hook into everyone where they didn’t before. There’s alot of power there and while it so far seems to be for good, that can get weird fast with add ons, new costs to connect, and subscriptions fees. Personally, I think they should share in with a revenue model for others somehow.
In saying that, maybe that last part is how the other OEMs catch-up. They maybe just have to pay 3rd parties to connect to them from development to a rev-share model. My dad Lanny Faleide brought up that idea and I think there’s something to it. In order for the other OEMs to also grab more connections which they aren’t getting now, they just might have to pay to play.
To go deeper on that, it’d likely be way cheaper to pay others than their current model via marketing and acquisitions. Almost create a more open source process. Heck, maybe all the others combo in to support it to take on JD collectively! It’s not a new concept, look at QGIS, GDAL, other other open geospatial processes vs ESRI or Linux vs Microsoft. It can work.
While that all spawns a whole other convo, getting back to it all here is that link to my latest newsletter edition. Subscribe and Share if you’d be so kind. https://lnkd.in/gQ-xWDJM
While they are the hunter and have the upper hand, there are ways to lurk in the bushes and time your strike back if you’re smart. Will they?
