Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two The Brookings Institution reports, he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years. He quotes Annelies Goger, a Brookings Metro fellow and co-author of the report: “The changes that we propose involve a transformative shift in how employers in the U.S. have seen themselves, from being a consumer of talent to being a co-producer of talent… Eventually, more employers will come to the conclusion that they have to play a more active role in creating the prepared workforce they need.” You can read the entire newsletter where he explores “A Unified Voice on Workforce Needs” here: https://lnkd.in/g_wEEgqn?

🌟 Championing Adaptability: Lessons from High School DECA 🌟 Reflecting on my journey, I realize how much my high school DECA experience in the mid-1990s has shaped my approach to adaptability in both life and career. 💼✨ Picture this: a small bayou town in one of the most southern points of Louisiana, Terrebonne Parish, known for its fishing and oil and gas industries. This unique backdrop set the stage for our DECA adventures. Our teacher challenged us to navigate the real-world job market, pushing us to find employment. While some sought jobs in their desired fields, others took a more diversified approach, finding roles that aligned with their goals, even if they weren't in their chosen fields. It wasn’t easy. We faced numerous challenges in securing jobs, especially in a town with limited career paths outside fishing and oil. Yet, each job secured was a victory, a glimpse into our future realities and a testament to our adaptability. DECA taught us to think on our feet, pivot strategies, and work together under pressure, whether in competitions, organizing events, or developing marketing campaigns. Adaptability was at the heart of it all. 📈💡 From DECA, I learned invaluable lessons: sharpening problem-solving skills, the importance of teamwork, and the necessity of continuous learning to stay relevant in a changing market. One specific challenge I remember was organizing a community event on a tight budget—an exercise in creativity and resourcefulness that still serves me today. 🚀 To all current DECA members and alumni, remember that the skills you’re honing now will be invaluable in the future. Embrace change, stay adaptable, and keep pushing forward! 🌠 #HighSchoolExperience #SkillsDevelopment #CareerJourney #LifelongLearning #ProblemSolving #Teamwork #MarketTrends #CareerAdvice #Resilience #LearningAndDevelopment #CareerSuccess #Louisiana #BayouLife

As we continue to see trends of increasing costs of higher education and questions about the ROI of a four-year degree, I appreciated this recent article, from the The Career Leadership Collective, which highlighted the important connection between career education, college student retention, and post-graduation outcomes. Career development is often an overlooked factor in student success outcomes, but this article points out that career uncertainty is one of the major factors impacting student enrollment. I see evidence of this every day in my work, which is why I am so excited that our Carlson School Student Life and Career Design Team, is able to offer scalable early career education through our intentional curriculum, alongside targeted one-on-one career coaching and student engagement support for every Carlson student.
Why career education is a crucial component of college retention initiatives.
