I like this quote I read about Juneteenth, "Juneteenth, the day we celebrate the end of slavery, the day we memorialize those who offered us hope for the future and the day when we renew our commitment to the struggle for freedom.”

👉🏾The Haitian Revolution brought an end to slavery and French colonial rule in Haiti in 1804. 👉🏾 In Saint Lucia and the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean, our enslaved ancestors were freed in 1834, a year after the official proclamation. 👉🏾 The formal end of slavery in the Spanish-speaking countries of South and Central America occurred during pivotal independence movements which began as early as the 1810s, with slavery ending in most of these countries by the 1850s. Slavery in Puerto Rico ended in 1873, and in Cuba in 1886. 👉🏾 After a 10-year transition period from the initial proclamation, enslaved persons in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles were freed in 1873. 👉🏾 In 1888, Brazil was the last country in the Americas where slavery came to an end. ---------- Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the United States which is an important part of this timeline. Occurring in 1865, this places the US as one of the last countries to end slavery in the Americas. This TedX animation was beautifully and intentionally crafted and gives a comprehensive overview of the end of slavery in the United States and the continued fight for racial equality for Black Americans to this day.

During #BlackHistoryMonth, Shuntae Richardson, M.P.A., quality supports specialist for the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership at National Louis University, is already looking ahead to this year’s Juneteenth holiday in June. Richardson suggests that early educators start brainstorming ideas to mark the day in their classrooms or programs, and makes some suggestions to help you prepare to create an enriching Juneteenth celebration, including: >>Visit an African American Museum. >>Meet with staff before and after the visit to discuss what you learned, what you felt, and how you might be able to engage with children and families in gaining a better understanding of Black History. >>Discuss what you have learned or didn’t learn about Juneteenth. >>Create an environment during Juneteenth that allows children to learn while having fun. >>Engage in cultural activities that can help staff and families learn from one another. This day marks a pivotal moment in American history when, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸-𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Encourage supporting local Black-owned businesses and share recommendations. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: Organize volunteer opportunities or support initiatives that benefit the African American community. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲: Take time to reflect on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within your organization and recognize areas for improvement. Today, we acknowledge Juneteenth, a significant day of freedom and progress. The journey towards true freedom and equity is an ongoing endeavor, with Juneteenth serving as an important marker along the way. It is a time to reflect on the progress made, while also acknowledging that there is still work to be done to address systemic inequalities and ensure that the promise of liberty is extended to every member of our society. As we observe Juneteenth, let us be inspired to continue the fight for justice, to amplify diverse voices, and to build a more inclusive and equitable future for generations to come.
