Today's ramblings of a mad man: I had a wonderful colleague of mine send me a message asking which of the name options she presented were the better choices for an emergency management role. And there it is folks; the $1000,000,000 question for our profession. What should we call ourselves. We suffer a significant identity crisis where we don't know what to call ourselves and others most definitely don't know what we are. It is clear to all what a police officer is and does, what a paramedic is and does, what a nurse is and does, what an electrician is and does etc., But what is an "Emergency Manager" and what do they do? While other professions, e.g., paramedics, have different levels within their roles their primary job is clear. I recently presented to a EM Conference about EM in Canada and I noted that nationally PSEPC Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness has had 15 name changes in 60 years. Locally, based on the attendees of the conference, there were 18 different role titles present representing 10 differently titled programs/departments. If we as a profession cannot decide on consistent language we cannot expect others to know what to call us or what we do. Generally, folk who set off fire alarms in nursing homes in the middle of the night are looked on as complete nuisances. But not me. Setting off alarms is part of my job. Of course, I agree the timings with management in advance. The point is to carry out regular tests of emergency fire safety and evacuation procedures. It’s great when everything goes smoothly but perhaps it’s even better when things go wrong. Because, if we can improve fire safety, we increase the chances of saving lives if a fire does break out at a later date. For example, I love it when we can highlight areas where extra staff training is needed. Also, we can make sure that fire alarms and other safety equipment are in good working order. #fireriskassessment #firesafetytips #emergencyevacuation

somebody in my network asked me for the steps in QRT ( Quick Response Team) (1) Always check if the emergency contacts or emergency response system are working or not. (2) Shortlist the people for your team (3) In QRT people from top to bottom management performs their role differently. (4) Team members of QRT: (1) MS, Adminstrator , Electrician, Nursing in charge , Maintaince manager , Housekeeping in charge , Multitasking staff , Security comes. (It also differs in different organisations as per the availability of staff. (5) Whenever any emergency arises everyone in the QRT should know what to do ,how to respond and patient safety should be in mind. (6) First steps during emergency is to find out the source of that particular emergency. (7) Then act as per the nature of emergency, evacuation should be done safely without harming the patients . (8) Analysis and evaluation and corrective measures should be discussed once everything has been solved. (9) These types of incidences should be raised in the committee meetings and our approach always should be preventive. we should try and implement all measures which can avoid such type of emergencies in the future.

Emergency response has become too relaxed. It's too easy to become a cop, too easy to become a fire fighter, too easy to become a paramedic, too easy to join search and rescue... and so on Your mental and physical capabilities are the difference between life and death for your subject, let alone yourself --- Fat cops, fire fighters who don't know how to handle ethanol fires, paramedics who don't stay up to date on current medicine, search and rescue personnel who can't hike If you work in emergency response, to a healthy degree, you should eat, sleep and breathe the job; you should be obsessed with your performance out of a selfless desire to serve others If you aren't willing to be committed to bettering yourself, willing to be responsible for someone's life, get an office job. Late paperwork won't kill anyone --- Organizations need to raise their standards Physical recertification should be done yearly, knowledge/skill tests should be done yearly and with the release of significant advancements and truly committed people should be hired If your cadets are graduating without knowledge and skills well in excess of the requirements and what was taught, you need to raise your agency's standards. Public Safety Telecommunicators, often referred to as dispatchers, play a crucial role in emergency response and public safety. In Marathon County, the 911 Communications Center operates 24/7/365 to deliver critical emergency services to our community. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center serves 12 law enforcement agencies, 33 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies and 33 fire departments. Our Public Safety Telecommunicators provide vital support: ☎ Emergency Call Handling: Telecommunicators are the first point of contact when individuals dial emergency services (such as 911). They gather information about the emergency, assess the situation, and prioritize the response accordingly. ☎ Dispatching Emergency Services: Once they have assessed the situation, telecommunicators dispatch appropriate emergency services, including police, fire, and medical responders. ☎ Providing Instructions: Telecommunicators often provide life-saving instructions (CPR, First Aid, etc.) to callers while emergency responders are en-route. ☎ Maintaining Communication: Throughout an emergency response, telecommunicators maintain communication with both callers and emergency responders. They provide updates, relay important information, and ensure that responders have the information they need. ☎ Supporting Public Safety Personnel: Telecommunicators provide essential support to public safety personnel, including dispatching reinforcements, monitoring their safety, and providing critical information as needed. ☎ Managing Information Systems: Telecommunicators often use complex computer systems to input and access information related to emergencies, including location data, caller information, and details about the incident. ☎ Remaining Calm Under Pressure: Perhaps most importantly, telecommunicators must remain calm, focused, and composed under extremely stressful and high-pressure situations. Their ability to think quickly and make sound decisions can be critical in saving lives. Public Safety Telecommunicators provide vital support and assistance to those in need 24/7, 365 days a year. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public safety make them an essential part of our community's emergency response infrastructure. When a medical emergency or injury takes place, whether it is an employee or patron, knowing what to do and being able to react quickly can limit the severity of the health scare or injury. Your workplace must provide first aid equipment, first aid facilities and a trained first aid officer to respond rapidly and appropriately in the event a person/s requires first aid intervention. What is considered activities of daily living (ADLs)? Eating Bathing Dressing Personal hygiene: grooming and toileting Sit and stand Continence Walking/mobility These are everyone’s basic needs. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) include, Grocery shopping and meal preparation Laundry Housekeeping Personal finance management Safety and emergency response capability Medication management Transportation We see multiple clients who once could do all those tasks and then they can’t. Those could be People injured, whether in a fall, MVC, a breach in standards of care, and certain diseases. When a person is unable or has a difficult time completing these everyday tasks they can become frustrated, anxious, and even angry. They might have the feeling of loss, a feeling of loss of control, and fear. We as people have a hard time depending on others to assist us with basic needs as we were brought into this world and taught to be independent. So when gathering data for a life care plan make sure you provide resources to assist with not only their basic needs but the psychological effects of dealing and accepting their new way of living.
