“TV and movies don't always show the laboratory correctly or in a good light. There is so much more than pushing a button or dipping a stick. If you are thinking about a lab job, a good lab tech is inquisitive, pays attention to detail, does not cut corners, follows directions, and does not compromise on ethics. Each specimen is a patient counting on you to help figure out what is wrong or if their meds are doing what they are supposed to or just if they are healthy. If you are someone who wants to be in the health field but does not want too much patient contact and has the above characteristics, then I would recommend becoming a Laboratory professional. But realize, you will be the invisible piece of the health care industry, assisting in diagnosing patients without any glory or praise except you knowing that they couldn't diagnose without us.” Taking a chance on healthcare, led Joanne to a fulfilling, long career: “When I was a senior in high school, I did not know what I wanted to do. My mom sent information in the healthcare field to a local college. Her sister was an RN, and her opinion was there would always be a job in the health field. I first chose X-ray, not knowing anything about either Lab or X-ray. They only took 2 students that year and I wasn't one of them. So up next was Laboratory. I registered for classes and was told the program was now an Associate Degree, upgraded from the CLA Certificate program that was being phased out. Which was great for me! I have been a Medical Laboratory Technician for 40 years.” #MedicalLabProfessionalsWeek #HealthcareJobs

As a Medical Lab professional, I strongly believe in the importance of competency assessment in our field. Not only does it ensure that we are providing accurate and reliable results, but it also helps us stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology and techniques. Competency assessment is a continuous process that involves evaluating the skills, knowledge, and performance of medical lab technologists. It helps to identify areas for improvement and provides opportunities for professional development. There are many tools available for conducting competency assessments, including proficiency testing, checklists, and direct observation. The frequency of assessments may vary depending on the laboratory's policies and procedures, but it should be done at least semi annually for new staff and annually for existing staff. Competency assessment is crucial for maintaining the integrity and quality of laboratory results. Let's continue to prioritize this important aspect of our profession. #MedicalLabTechnology #CompetencyAssessment #ProficiencyTesting #Checklists #DirectObservation #ContinuousProcess #ProfessionalDevelopment #QualityResults #Integrity #PatientCare

Clinical Application Specialist | 13 years in Laboratory Diagnostics & QA | Former Senior Technician & Haematology Lead | ISO 15189 Auditor | Mentor to aspiring lab professionals.
The TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT of a "typical" medical laboratory in 🇿🇦 consists of the following key professionals: 1. Laboratory assistants (LA) 2. Laboratory Technicians (GT) 3. Laboratory Technologists (MT) 4. Laboratory Scientists (MS) How these 4 groups of professionals function and interact in practice is not necessarily how they work in "theory" or as per HPCSA... Negative connotations of this is that: ✔️A superiority complex develops over one group to another which is oftentimes misplaced. ✔️A sense of entitlement in career advancement opportunities develops over one group to another. ✔️Entitlement of higher salaries in one group over another develops without taking into consideration experience, knowledge and education. 👉🏾A consequence that I have seen playing itself out over and over again is a decline in sharing of information, education and knowledge amongst 'supposedly' peers. Patient first, always! #MedicalTechnologist #BiomedicalScientist #MedicalTechnician #CareerGrowth
