#Entrepreneurship, #Leadership and #Growth… Every #startup irrespective of the domain, size, expertise have multiple phases in its journey. The zeal or craziness of a few commonly termed as Founder(s) leads to the initiation of entrepreneurship. These entrepreneur(s) have a belief in their ideas and a dream to make it big. This journey can be very closely related to the Bengali song by Rabindra Nath Tagore “Jodi tor dak shune keu na ase tobe ekla cholo re” means “If no one answers your call, then walk alone…”. In this phase, the entrepreneur(s) has to do all the work themselves i.e., starting from sales to product mgt to accountancy and everything. I call this phase the most challenging, exciting, rigorous and eye opener for the entrepreneur(s), enabling the entrepreneurs to gain knowledge and be insightful (the experience and knowledge gained are the key difference between the entrepreneur(s) and the rest). The next phase of journey begins post some success in the entrepreneurship and more members believes in the idea and jump in the boat to venture into the blue ocean for some early kills. This is the beginning of Leadership phase for the entrepreneur(s). This phase needs to be very carefully curated as their can be expectation mismatch. The level of passion, excitement, dedication, time devotion may vary among team members and entrepreneur(s). Hence, clarity of thoughts and clear dialogue are very critical to set the right expectations. This phase sets the direction of the start-up and establishing a leadership team to take on the growth phase of the journey. The growth phase kicks in with the financial stability of the start-up. This transforms in a positive trend of business along with the structuring of the organization and building of the team. The bringing of the teams to at par level of product and business understanding, speed of execution and delivery is the key to success of any start-up. The alignment of passion, energy, commitment of new team members with the early team is the key to success of the start-up. This growth phase of the start-up needs to be rejuvenated constantly by something similar to the concept deployed in Maglev trains – “the magnetic fields that both pull the train forward from the front and push it forward from behind” means the leadership has to motivate and pull the middle mgt upwards the ladder and the middle order should be pushed up from the new team members joining the team by aligning and delivering as per the goals of the start-up. In order to achieve a stable and smooth sailing position, the hiring of team plays the most critical role in the growth phase of any start-up. It’s all about building the right team.
