We all need a little reminder sometimes about our students, especially those with unique needs. I know I struggled in the past meeting all the needs of my students, and it is not easy to create truly inclusive classrooms and school buildings. 🍎 Important things to remember: Meeting a student where they are at, and providing the accommodations outlined in their IEP is not special treatment, it is part of their Specialized Education which enables them to learn with their peers at their own pace in their own way. 🍎 Inclusive environments are tough, but they do benefit everyone, allowing students to learn from a young age that everyone is different, learns differently, and needs different things. This is one of the most common misunderstandings I encounter: Educators think that the three tiers of MTSS equate to three different learning programs. 🛑 The real story: Every student engages with Tier 1 instruction. Assessment data informs educators on which students need additional support using methods from Tier 2 and/or Tier 3. Each tier should work seamlessly with one another. Let’s unpack this further. 👇 ✏️ If students are experiencing different instructional or intervention systems, teachers can bring alignment by ensuring students are experiencing the same instructional methods, skills, vocabulary, and scope across the tiers of instruction that they receive. ✏️ The difference between Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 is a difference in intensity. They are not necessarily different programs but different levels of instruction that coordinate to support students. ✏️ What makes it more intensive (and differentiates the tiers) is spending more time focusing on the skill that the student is missing, or teaching in a smaller group size that offers more opportunities to respond to student needs and breaks instructional tasks into smaller steps. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, 40.4 million adults fall into “Some College, No Credential” (SCNC) meaning that they started college but did not finish. It is important that we understand the educational trajectories of adult students as they reenter our institutions.
