Would Chris Minns #policy advisors please stand up? When is worked in #juvenilejustice centres in #NSW I always recall a young girl, 15 from Tweed Heads - breach her bail for stealing a can of V and deodorant. She was transported all the way down from Tweed to Sydney, where she was denied bail and stayed on remand again for a further few weeks. This experience did NOTHING to divert this young person away from further offending. So who are they? like who is/are the person that advised Chris Minns and NSW Government around the new policy to increase youth incarceration? I need to understand the thinking, evidence and rationale. Cause it goes against everything we already know. I am sure they are on #linkedin - Maybe they will see this post and If they do. I would love to speak with them, make it make sense for us. And even invite them onto the Impact Policy AU podcast. Just like the Aboriginal Legal Service highlights "Your new policy to increase youth incarceration: is a betrayal of your Closing the Gap commitments ignores decades of evidence on how to reduce youth crime prioritises punishment over investment in the proven prevention strategies that you promised to implement will cause crime to get worse will delay measures that could reduce crime" Sign the petition here and call on the Government to not turn their back on Closing the Gap justice targets for young people. Call for an investment into early intervention, trauma informed, Culturally safe and holistic programs for healing and wellbeing. https://lnkd.in/gFUtRUvm

Explore our carousel highlighting the vital role of family connections in the rehabilitation journey of incarcerated individuals. From emotional support and stability during incarceration to reducing recidivism rates upon release, maintaining strong family ties makes a significant impact. Family visits and regular communication not only improve inmate behaviour but also provide crucial support for children, reducing the trauma of separation. As partners in reintegration, families offer practical assistance like housing and employment support, which are essential for a successful transition post-release. Let's recognise and celebrate the importance of family in fostering positive outcomes. ✴️ Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) believes that now, more than ever, is the time for strategic investment that will not only address current pressures, but also lay the foundation for a more just and equitable system in the future. 6️⃣ We put forward six asks for #Budget2025. These asks call for investment that would go towards addressing the unmet need in mental health and addiction support, reducing pre-trial detention (remand), providing more alternatives to prison, enhancing accountability, supporting families of people in prison and preventing homelessness. ❓ But why do they matter? See the slides below or read them on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/em-fbcUW #mentalhealth #addiction #families #alternatives #prison #jail #accountability #housing

Tuesday's #Budget2025 announcements shouldn't be about creating more prison spaces that are years in the making and will do little to alleviate the current prison overcrowding crisis. The State needs to invest in measures that will actually reduce the number of people who end up in prison - very often unnecessarily - for short sentences, non-violent and less serious offences or while awaiting trial. Addressing the underlying issues that so many people face in the lead up to committing an offence, while in prison or post-release - addiction, mental health challenges, poverty and homelessness - will not only result in safer communities but a fairer society.

Statistics show that parents have a huge impact in a child's life but what if you're separated from your child because of incarceration? It can be difficult to miss out on all the special moments of your child's life. Don't forget to pray for those in prison, as well as their children and their caretakers. Connecting incarcerated people and their families while separated can help mitigate the harms of incarceration and reduce recidivism. Video visits can play a key role in maintaining these connections, but they shouldn't be the only way for incarcerated people to see their loved ones. Policies that replace in-person visits with video visitation and force families to pay to see their loved ones go against decades of evidence that show it is counterproductive to isolate incarcerated people from their families and communities. https://lnkd.in/etCpPNRZ

The findings of the Parliamentary Inquiry into Children Affected by Parental Incarceration include tangible, practical recommendations to address the negative impacts of parental incarceration on children. Decarceration must be a priority - less mothers in prison means less children torn away from their families. Improving family connections by improving child-friendly visiting facilities and making phone calls free are also no-brainers. The government's 2 page response fails to address these issues in any meaningful way. Let's interrupt the care to prison pipeline by ensuring children can stay connected with their families, and stop locking up their mums. https://lnkd.in/g_RpWHVF
