Vayu's journey began with a devastating diagnosis—advanced liver disease, Biliary Atresia, detected just 7 days after his birth. Despite undergoing Kasai surgery, hope dwindled as the disease persisted. Desperate for a solution, his parents sought refuge at Nanavati Max Hospital. There, under the expert care of Dr. Vibhor Borkar and Dr. Anurag Shrimal, hope flickered once more. Liver Transplant Surgery emerged as the beacon of possibility. But hurdles loomed large; Vayu's sensitization to the donor's blood group complicated matters. With unwavering determination, a multidisciplinary team embarked on the arduous path of desensitization. Amidst the child's battle with pneumonia and the rarity of the protocol worldwide, the modified technique of surgery prevailed. Today, Vayu thrives, free from complications, embracing a future brimming with promise. His journey, a testament to resilience and the power of medical innovation, inspires hope in the face of adversity. https://bit.ly/4cPpc5N #NanavatiMaxHospital #PatientStory #SuccessStory #LiverDisease #LiverTransplant

Researcher (FG) with a Passion for Surgery | Vice President of Research Department at the National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases
#Publication_Alert I am thrilled to share our recent publication in the Annals of Medicine and Surgery We investigated a case of schistosomal colitis mimicking inflammatory bowel disease in a 23-year-old male patient from Sudan. This case highlights the importance of considering schistosomiasis in the differential diagnosis of colitis, especially in patients who reside in an endemic area. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications. This case underscores the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for this condition, as early diagnosis and treatment can improve patient outcomes. This research was conducted at the National Center for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, under the supervision of Dr Abdel Mounem El Tayeib, the center's general director and our mentor. 💡 NHS Introduces Groundbreaking Priority System for High-Risk Liver Transplants 💡 The NHS has implemented a world-first priority system for liver transplants, targeting patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF)—a condition with a staggering 70% mortality rate. This new system will give hope to patients who previously had little chance of survival. During the pilot, 77% of ACLF patients who received transplants were alive one year after surgery, compared to a 100% fatality rate for those who didn’t undergo the procedure. This initiative has now become standard practice across the UK and is being reviewed for potential adoption in other countries. A major step forward in improving patient outcomes! This on-demand webinar on incision care is worth watching. Dr Daniel Chaverri, MD, PhD, Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon & Dr Sara Carvalhal, MD, Consultant Surgical Oncologist highlight why undisturbed post-surgical wound management with an advanced dressing is key. This will assist in maintaining wound temperature, keeping the wound free from infection and wound dehiscence and promotes optimal post-surgical outcomes for the wound. The best moment to start surgical wound care is in the OT with an advanced dressing or NPWT as required and leave undisturbed for 7 days if the wound allows it.

We at #Archelis are proud to participate in the 60th Annual Congress of the Japan Society for Transplantation. The theme for this year’s conference is “The Power to Connect; The Power to Change”. At Archelis, we are dedicated to changing the notion that #surgeons must suffer from chronic fatigue and back pain due to their profession. Our #exoskeleton, Archelis, supports doctors and nurses during long surgeries by distributing weight from the feet to the thighs and shins. We believe that by alleviating part of the physical burden of #surgery, we can improve the lives of both doctors and their patients, creating a better, healthier world. What are the characteristics of a high functioning deceased donor kidney transplant system? Pleased to present our paper examining the BC Transplant experience. 78% donor consent <2% of kidneys discarded 95% 1 year all cause allograft survival System policies to improve performance include: 1) Hospital donor coordinators 2) Early communication between the OPO and transplant team 3) Dedicated organ recovery and implant surgeons 4) Age-based kidney allocation 5) Hospital admission of recipients prior to organ recovery Additional work is needed to standardise reporting of system processes within OPOs so that better cross-jurisdictional comparisons can be performed which may help optimise OPO performance https://lnkd.in/gW5HHrXX
