This, thanks Connie 🙏 There's a huge amount of schadenfreude around "the metaverse" and a lot of it from people in pretty senior positions which is very unhelpful But staring at a small rectangle of glass and plastic for several hours a day is just ridiculously not normal The metaverse/spatial computing/extended reality is just using the power of the information and tools accessible via the internet in 3D, which is how we do everything else And it's getting easier to do, and will hugely change the way we do things It reminds me of this from over 500 years ago : "It ought to be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. Because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new. This coolness arises partly from fear of the opponents, who have the laws on their side, and partly from the incredulity of men, who do not readily believe in new things until they have had a long experience of them." I was inspired by Shurick Agapitov's talk about metaverse as the future for the internet. https://lnkd.in/gcFCuSsn Here are the key takeaways, which actually can blow your mind: 🔮 Metaverse is the future form of the internet, built with video game technology on the front-end and potentially blockchain on the back-end. 🌐 It's not just virtual environments, but an integration of virtual spaces, items, and AI-powered characters - a "web-free-D" experience. 🚶 His vision is being able to walk between different virtual worlds in the metaverse while carrying digital items/identities, similar to hyperlinks on the web. 🤖 AI will enable compelling brand ambassadors/representatives in the metaverse to deeply connect with audiences. ⚖️ Existing internet regulations and platform rules should apply to governing the metaverse. 🔋 Energy-efficient computing, rendering, and connectivity are critical challenges for scaling the metaverse successfully. The key vision is a future where physical and virtual worlds converge, opening up new frontiers for experiences, commerce, and engagement in ways we can barely imagine today.
