IS THIS TRULY A THANKLESS JOB? “Property and facilities management is a thankless job”... When I heard these words, it hit me like a wave! And then there was the question stuck in my head… Is this truly a thankless job? Property and facilities management can indeed be a thankless job but fulfilling because it serves others. These professionals ensure that buildings and spaces are safe, functional, and welcoming. Their work often goes unnoticed unless something goes wrong, yet their contributions are vital to the smooth operation of businesses, residences, and public spaces. By maintaining and improving the environments where people live and work, property and facilities managers play a crucial role in enhancing quality of life and productivity for many. The service-oriented nature of the job can bring a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose, knowing that their efforts significantly impact the well-being and efficiency of others. Their tasks can include maintaining the physical integrity of properties, overseeing repairs and renovations, managing budgets, ensuring safety compliance, coordinating with vendors and tenants, and much more. Recognizing and appreciating their efforts is important, as they play a vital role in creating comfortable, safe and functional environments. So, how can tenants and landlords assist property and facilities managers in making their jobs better? • Clear communication: maintain open, honest and timely communication about issues, needs, and expectations. This helps managers address concerns promptly and efficiently. • Timely reporting: report maintenance issues or repairs as soon as they arise. Early detection can prevent minor problems from becoming major, costly repairs. • Proactive maintenance: perform minor maintenance tasks within their capability, such as changing light bulbs or batteries in air conditioner remotes which reduces the workload on the property managers. • Cooperation during upgrades: cooperate with planned maintenance and upgrade schedules. Being flexible and accommodating can make projects go smoother. • Understanding limitations: recognize the scope and limitations of a manager’s responsibilities and avoid unrealistic demands. Patience and understanding go a long way. • Community engagement: foster a sense of community and encourage neighbours to respect shared spaces and facilities, reducing misuse and vandalism. • Feedback and appreciation: provide constructive feedback and express appreciation for the manager’s work. Positive reinforcement can boost morale and motivation. • Contractual compliance: ensure compliance with lease terms and other contractual agreements to avoid unnecessary conflicts and complications. By fostering a collaborative and respectful environment, tenants and landlords can significantly ease the challenges property and facilities managers face, leading to a better-maintained property and a more pleasant living or work experience for everyone involved. #LinkedIn
