Private Crop Insurance Coverage: What is it? Typically, most crop insurance agents advise their clients that Multi-Peril policies don't cover everything that could happen to your crops. To fill the gaps, many companies offer "private products" or "named peril insurance" plans. These plans cover a variation of specific crops against specific damage. In turn, insurance companies are more likely to deny coverage because they are not federally reinsured.

COTTON STAX AND MODIFIED SUPPLEMENTAL COVERAGE OPTION: CONCERNS WITH MOVING CROP INSURANCE FROM RISK MANAGEMENT TO INCOME SUPPORT — by Gary Schnitkey, Jonathan Coppess, Nick Paulson, Bruce Sherrick and Carl Zulauf The Farm Bill version reported by the House Agricultural Committee would modify Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO), a crop insurance policy that provides county-level coverage. Because the modifications proposed for SCO would make it very similar to the STAX insurance program for cotton, we evaluate the historical performance of STAX to provide indications of how modified SCO could operate. Since it was first available in 2015, STAX has paid over 50% of the time and has averaged $37 per insured acre more in insurance payments than farmer-paid premiums, making STAX more like an income support program rather than a crop insurance program. Income supports often increase cash rents and land values, thereby negating a portion of the risk protection offered by crop insurance. Moreover, STAX and the modified SCO could influence planting decisions, adding distortions to the market that decrease prices and lower farm income. Estimating insured yield: It’s that time of year again when growers are asked to nominate a yield estimate for their crop insurance. These estimates only ever need to reflect a reasonable expectation of this seasons yields. Before the revision date, CRU’s policies allow for the insured yield to match the crop’s potential yield up to double the level of the yield estimated by the grower. Ask your insurance broker for a copy of CRU’s Broadacre Claim Calculator to explore how the policy works before and after the revision date. #cropinsurance
