Yesterday, I had the privilege of laying a wreath at an ANZAC Day memorial service in Mitcham. As an Indian immigrant there are few approaches you can take to ANZAC, given that for most Indians grow up thinking of the world wars as really "their" wars, not "our" wars. 1. Enjoy the holiday and leave it to schools to teach our children what ANZAC Day is all about. In its own way, it is a humble thing. You are letting time and space do its job of weathering away India and adding Australianness to your children. 2. Insert Indians into the ANZAC history. People forget that Indians were a part of the British Empire during the First World War and nearly 15,000 Indians fought alongside ANZACs in Gallipoli, and about 1,400 died on the front. Some Indians use the ANZAC to draw attention to that. I am fine with this too as long as it isn't done in a scolding way, as proof of racism of the Empire. The truth is that Indians went out of their way after 1947 (when India gained independence) to repudiate their connections with the Empire. If Indian soldiers in First World War are not recognised and honoured in India, what are the chances of them being recognised in Australia and other outposts. It smells of divisiveness and victimhood when presented as a 'huh... but what about us' frame. 3. Accept that human bravery and sacrifice transcends our race, and we can take pride in what the ANZAC's did, and what servicemen and women do everyday - put their lives on the line. There doesn't have to be an Indian connection for me to take pride in it or connect to it - it is above all, a human story. It is with this final spirit that I find my place in the ANZAC history as an immigrant. #ANZAC #nation #veterans #immigrants #Australia
