55 years ago today, history was made as Apollo 11 landed on the moon for the very first time! 🚀 On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface, with Armstrong famously declaring: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This incredible achievement not only marked a significant milestone in space exploration but also united people around the world in awe and wonder. The Apollo 11 mission showcased the power of human ingenuity, determination, and collaboration, proving that with hard work and dedication, we can accomplish the seemingly impossible. OTD in 1969 the lunar module (Snoopy) for the Apollo 10 mission came within 7.8 nautical miles of the lunar surface during a full dress rehearsal for the upcoming Apollo 11 mission. Aviation legends Gene Cernan, Tom Stafford, and John Young were the astronauts on this mission. All 3 have been recognized for their achievements by the National Aeronautic Association. Gene Cernan and Tom Stafford are recipients of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy (2007 and 2011 respectively). John Young as part of STS-1 and the development of the space shuttle in 1981 received recognition as a Collier recipient. Some fun facts about Apollo 10 and the crew: ✨ Snoopy's approach to the moon was the closest approach before the actual landing by Apollo 11 ✨ Apollo 10 was the first mission to broadcast color television signal from space ✨ Apollo 10 set the record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned vehicle. The spacecraft hit 24,791 mph during its return to Earth. ✨ John Young holds the current ratified FAI record for duration of stay on the surface of the celestial body at 71 h 02 min 13 sec (Apollo 16) ✨ Eugene Cernan is the last person to walk on the moon and holds the current ratified FAI record for distance covered on board a vehicle on the surface of the celestial body at 4.5 miles and extravehicular duration on the surface of the celestial body by an astronaut at 21 h 31 min 44 sec (Apollo 17 mission) Do you know an aviation pioneer and legend? One year ago, we announced that the official tartan for the Scot Forge Aerospace Team is Earthrise Tartan, designed by Steven Patrick Sim. Today, our team stands proudly sporting the Earthrise Tartan! #NationalTartanDay In 2013, Steven Sim found his inspiration for the tartan design while looking at the world-famous photograph ‘Earthrise,’ taken aboard Apollo 8 during lunar orbit by astronaut Will Anders on December 24th, 1968. The tartan reminds us of how precious and unique our planet is. “Thus inspired by earthlight, the tartan prompts us to remember our common humanity. It reminds us of the humility we should all share with each other, that despite all the differences and contentions that exist among us, we are all from the same source.”- Steven Sim. Here is where Mr. Sim found some of his inspiration behind the tartan: - The colors you see in the tartan represent Earth, Space and the Moon. - Six colors in the tartan represent the six days of the mission. - The total thread count (147) represents the total hours of the mission. - The 68 black threads represent the year 1968, the year the mission took place. - The three black stripes represent the crew members. The Mission photographer Bill Anders grabbed his camera and took a photograph we now know as Earthrise. Fifty years later, on Christmas 2018, Anders wrote: ‘The Earth we saw rising over the battered grey lunar surface was small and delicate, a magnificent spot of colour in the vast blackness of space. Once-distant places appeared inseparably close. Borders that once rendered division vanished. All of humanity appeared joined together on this glorious-but-fragile sphere. We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth. Fifty years later, ‘Earthrise’—the lingering imprint of our mission—stands sentinel. It still reminds us that distance and borders and division are merely a matter of perspective. We are all linked in a joined human enterprise; we are bound to a planet we all must share. We are all, together, stewards of this fragile treasure…’ Planetism is a new 21st century paradigm. It involves giving first allegiance to Planet, just as tribalism involves giving first allegiance to the tribe (one’s tribal, cultural, or religious identity), and nationalism involves giving first allegiance to nation. 🌍✨ Today at SpaceBuzz, we honor a true pioneer and inspiration: William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut. His iconic ‘Earthrise’ photo, taken in 1968, changed the way we see our planet. Sadly, we have received the news that Anders has passed away at the age of 90 in a plane crash. The ‘Earthrise’ photo, the first color image of Earth from space, captured our blue planet as a vulnerable and isolated “blue marble” amidst the darkness of space. This powerful image ignited the global environmental movement and transformed our philosophical perspective on Earth. At SpaceBuzz, we continue Anders’ mission. We use the ‘overview effect’ to inspire children to take positive action for our planet. By allowing them to experience the beauty and fragility of Earth from space, we hope to motivate a new generation to care for our world.
