🌍 Too many furniture companies claim sustainability without giving evidence. Gat Creek CEO Gat Caperton addresses the growing issue of greenwashing in the furniture industry: "It’s not just the false claims of sustainability that are the problem. Whilst materials recycling may not always lead to cost savings, it should be considered as a first stage of planning your retail fit out. Retailers who have more than one store should also look at using materials and more specifically installation or construction methods which make those materials recyclable elsewhere. #retailfitouts#sustainable#shops#recyclingmaterials#fitoutcosts#construction#recyclingfitouts

Taking a closer look at the furniture industry this week. Ended up with a personal challenge/commitment... 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: • 12% of global emissions • Fast Furniture - filling landfills • Deforestation, waste and toxics 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: • Industry leader IKEA showing leadership and doing so for all the right reasons (brand, positioning, planet and profit). • Adoption of Forest Stewardship Council sourced material. And much more. Give it a read (or listen to the post, I've added a voice-over). What are your thoughts on my personal challenge? Are you with me? #furniture #business #sustainability

As sustainability gains momentum in the commercial furniture industry, more manufacturers are stepping up to show their commitment. However, it can sometimes be challenging to separate genuine efforts from marketing hype. Here’s how we can challenge potential greenwashing and make informed, responsible furniture selections: 1. Seek third-party verified, multi-attribute certifications. These certifications provide a well-rounded view of the product’s environmental impact. 2. Look for transparency and humility in a company’s sustainability journey. The best manufacturers share both their successes and the areas they’re still working to improve. 3. Choose manufacturers with sustainability in their DNA who focus on long-term changes, not just a single "green hero" product. Together, we can encourage the industry to keep progressing toward truly sustainable solutions. Let’s support the companies making thoughtful, authentic changes while building spaces that are not only functional and beautiful but also kind to our planet.

To reach a circular economy, we all have a part to play. Furniture dealers have the unique opportunity to become key partners in driving circular economy practices. Beyond selling sustainable products, they can offer critical services that extend the life cycle of the furniture we work with, creating a positive impact on both the environment and clients' bottom line. By offering services such as: Design consultations for inventories and space reconfigurations In-house or outsourced refinishing, reupholstery, and repainting services Cleaning, repairs and maintenance services Labor for disassembly and transportation for donations or recycling By expanding beyond sales and into sustainable services, furniture dealers can play an important role in creating long-term value for both clients and the planet. This proactive approach not only strengthens client relationships but also helps build a circular economy where resources are used responsibly and efficiently. It’s a win for business, the client and the environment!
