One of the pain-points I heard from data leaders last year was that it can be hard to justify hiring a data engineer. Hiring a data scientist or analyst is generally easier to sell to the business because their work is immediately tangible. Many data scientists and analysts are also great at building SQL and notebooks workflows that can take data from Data Lakes and process it into a usable format. So why even hire data engineers? This is a question so many companies have run into. The truth is, companies can get away without data engineers for a little bit. But here’s what often happens. 1)Tech-debt starts to build 2) Lots of pipelines and data workflows get set-up for one-off requests 3) No one ever thinks about data governance 4) Even small changes risk breaking multiple critical flows 5) No one wants to own any of the above This has happened time and time again. It eventually comes to a head once the CEO is tired of dealing with conflicting numbers, slow dashboards and the constant "we can't change that, or something might break" responses. If you're that CEO or a data leader who needs to have that conversation with the CEO, then let's talk!

I want to share a wonderful article by Pedram Navid - The Rise of the Data Platform Engineer https://lnkd.in/gCTaTEZf When we started Statsig, I was a Data Scientist amongst a team of Software Engineers. I wrote our statistical methods as pipelines, and our engineers helped design and optimize our cloud data architecture. We saw success early, added more Data Scientists to better our stats engine while managing exponentially growing data volumes from our earliest customers (Thank you Headspace Notion and Ancestry). With scalability challenges, we needed an expert to bridge Data Science and Infra with our Data Architecture. We called this role a Data Engineer, but the term never felt right. I came from Meta where Data Engineers were part of the value-in-data creation chain, helping make data more accessible and useful by creating pipelines, datasets, and dashboards. Sure, our Data Engineers needed to build pipelines, but more importantly, they need to ensure our data platform had reliability, scalability, maintainability, and extensibility. Our product is Data, and it's not okay to deliver results incorrectly or late. On top of that, we needed custom data tooling while making sure Data Scientists could still build features quickly. I suddenly realized that we needed a data specialist that thought like a software engineer… a software engineer who loved working in data. Not surprisingly, when we listed job openings for Data Engineers, the applicants often lacked the right skills and experiences. But when we called it a Software Engineer on the Data team, we got the right people. The best candidates often held mixed job titles, switching between Data and Software Engineers… but they always identified as a Software Engineer. Pedram's article does an excellent job articulating how the role of Data Platform Engineer has risen and will replace what I knew as a Data Engineer. It makes a lot of sense that this is actually the role we've been hiring for. If you've read it and this resonates with you... we're hiring! Job description in the comments. But be prepared to explain what a Data Platform Engineer is and why you were born to do this.
