What does career mean is often discussed in career appointments. I've found this a useful definition: "A career is the variety of experiences that you have undertaken throughout your life. As you gain more experience in the worlds of work and life, you are building your career. Your career path takes account of your education, training and paid or unpaid work. It also includes your family and life roles, activities, volunteer work, community involvement and more." https://lnkd.in/e-ef3Qq3. I also find this a useful example https://lnkd.in/eChkVxtx But I felt I needed to make it more tangible and support their understanding of careers - what it encompasses and what it means for then and needed to scaffold the conversation to help them development their understanding at their own pace. So I developed these cards to use cars and journey to bring careers to life. The response has been brilliant from "it all makes sense" to "I now understand what I need to think about and it's not just jobs". And for some students, it has changed their whole engagement with the appointment. The cards have also help to identify what would be most helpful to the student in the session for moving their career thinking foward - almost signing posting my next steps or the resources and tools I use to support them. And they've been really powerful where the students has identified themselves where they need to focus on to move their own career thinking forward. I wasn't expecting that! Today, the word "passion" is thrown around casually, especially by children during career awareness sessions. While I strongly advocate for interest and natural strength-based career path selection, it's important to highlight the difference. Interest can be external or internal! For example, watching a movie and wanting to become a Police Officer is external interest, which may change with time or exposure to different heroes. Internal interests, however, are deeply aligned with one's values and personality. To differentiate between the two, one must 1. Converse to find the source of the interest, 2. Check the motivation behind selecting a particular option, 3. Ensure that the child understands the day-to-day work of their "passion" career, 4. Arrange a virtual or real internship and give clarity on the path they have to take. In this age of information, it's our duty to ensure that our children make informed career decisions. As you know it’s #NationalCareersWeek and I have an important ask for my LinkedIn connections. Young people with SEND are significantly underrepresented in the workforce, and there is a distinct lack of role models within our SEND schools. Delivered by Direct Education Business Partnership, and funded by the D2N2 Careers Hub, the Supported Insight Scheme aims to support these students through experiential workplace learning and employability workshops to prepare them for a Supported Internship or other employed pathway. Are you a Mansfield based employer who could support 4 fantastic young people from a local SEND school, by offering 6 short days (10am - 2pm) of experiential learning at your workplace? Giving young people with SEND the chance to undertake real work and experience the routines and habits of working life can significantly improve their employment prospects by helping them to develop their skills, gain confidence and ultimately supporting them to move closer to employment. It makes business sense to showcase your company to a diverse range of people, and who knows you could meet a potential future employee along the way! Have you really missed out? If you’re an unemployed 2023 grad, you may be feeling like you've missed your opportunity.   A lot of graduate schemes start hiring around the summer. "Bauke encourages Gen Z college students to join clubs, get part-time jobs and internships, and go to networking meetings with people who aren't their peers. She also suggested younger people get out of their comfort zones as much as possible." This aligns with the core of CampusROC: to connect our #GreaterROC students with local internships and jobs, encouraging them to explore the offerings of the #GreaterROC community. I challenge our HR professionals to also step out of their own comfort zones. Recognizing the unique characteristics of Gen Z, our expectations, recruitment strategies, onboarding processes, and professional development initiatives must evolve from traditional approaches of the past two decades. Adaptation is crucial for both Gen Z and employers. Let's embrace change and find common ground in meeting each other halfway.
