There is a huge supply and demand gap between need for mental health support and availability of experts. To add to that, many do not know that they are in need of mental health support. And there are many who avoid the appointment with experts due to the stigma associated with mental health support. We want to take one step at a time. Starting with our companion AI, Seva, that helps 24X7 support to elders who are lonely (loneliness leads to cognitive impairment). Through the empathy conversation, Seva will detect early signs of mild cognitive impairments or dementia and notify the caregivers/loved ones. In not so distant future, we do see the potential to provide this information in real time to the experts so that they can use this data along with other information to have a 360 degree view of the mental health of patient. https://lnkd.in/gNGYvN-b

"Companies that market AI for mental health, who use emotion terms like “empathy” or “trusted companion” are manipulating people who are vulnerable because they’re having mental health issues." So says Jodi Halpern MD, PhD in this smart Q&A about what AI can - and cannot - do for mental health. As she notes, AI has great promise for filling in gaps for access and treatment for mental health - but it is best considered a bridge to treatment, not a substitute for actual human understanding and empathy. Pioneering Human-AI Synergy + Patented Bio-Adaptive Interfaces + Compassionate & Humane Technologies + Based on 10y of award-winning science (AAAI award Stanford) + AI-patents (screens, audio, IoT)
Do we want to live in a Matrix or this world? Unfortunately a real question. The acceleration of AI has sped up this urgency. And unfortunately as someone who’s struggled with deep depression and lost friends to suicide, this is a heartfelt topic for me. 26% of Americans have a mental health diagnosis, almost 10% (over 21 million) depression. 50% of Americans in different subgroups—like adolescents and women with young children— suffer from loneliness. I was there as an adolescent and later. It’s a temptation to distract and not use one’s perception or interoception (observing one's own mental and emotional processes). Because it’s painful. What seems to happen is AI via LLMs is market as remedy or solution. When in fact humans are irreplaceable. When I suffered decades ago, we did not have these stats. Nor technology. Matrix comes from the word Māyā meaning illusion - that which appears different than it is. One can't dissociate the word illusion from perception. Interoception is the process of sensory experience from which we gather knowledge about the external world. As pointed out, AI can only fake empathy or compassion. “I’m very concerned about having an AI bot replace a human in a therapy that’s based on a vulnerable emotional relationship.” Mostly done to save costs and increase profits as pointed out. Nor can AI replace the process of interoception or mindfulness. What I do like in technology is community. The features of mental health apps like Insight Timer to embrace community, sharing mindful practices. Or we use AI to bridge the gap of tech and vital signs, for more somatic and personalized bio-adaptive tech. What helped me heal was a more somatic experience, a sensory embodied perception of the world. When I felt back, I diverted to distraction - and this attention economy is all about that. “We know it’s not perfect.” But let’s build more communal and connective tech, and not assume AI 🤖 are saving the world. They’re not. We have to do it. Ironically, LinkedIn prompts me to “Rewrite with AI” but I hope my human 🧠’s capacity with its “errors” suffices for this. No rewriting, just as with reality. https://lnkd.in/d2A5XxUx #ai #health #employeewellbeing #mentalhealth #digitalhealth #burnout #depression #anxiety #stress #burnout #science #ml #llms #bioadaptive #somatic
