Are our educational leaders thinking about new challenges in higher education after Generative AI have revolutionised everything and education as well?

With growing concern about Artificial intelligence ,the following should be a priority : Contemporary teachers and students should emphasize a combination of technical skills and soft skills. For teachers, staying updated on AI advancements and integrating technology in teaching methods is crucial. Students should focus on acquiring a strong foundation in STEM subjects, alongside developing critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. Encouraging curiosity and a growth mindset will also be valuable in adapting to the evolving AI landscape.

The prominent education historian Larry Cuban, who studied education reforms and history of technology in education, wrote about the "transformational" hyperbole of AI in education: Most discussions about artificial intelligence are characterised by hyperbole and hysteria. Though some of the world’s most prominent and successful thinkers regularly forecast that AI will either solve all our problems or destroy us or our society, and the press frequently reports on how AI will threaten jobs and raise inequality…. And on and on. The hyperbole attached to the use of technologies both in everyday life and classrooms are exaggerations anchored in magical thinking, not fact. When it comes to hyperbole, the “truthful” part is a casualty of rhetorical overkill.

Smaller is Better—A lot Better! One of the great promises of AI in education is personalization—the ability to tailor an educational plan for every student, specifically targeted for their strengths and weaknesses.  At least as far as academics are concerned. At Kalamazoo Country Day School, we already write personalized educational plans for our students. AI will help us streamline that process and improve its focus and academic results. AI will only help educate part of the child. This crucial aspect of education can only be done with intent by caring, committed, loving staff in a small class and small school situation. It is the model we use every day at our school. We educate the whole child with intent. We strive to give them the skills they will need to navigate the AI and quantum Computing future they will face. They leave our school with the ability to solve problems, collaborate, and think critically, with a significant level of student agency and a love of learning. Smaller is better. Research proves it. Students leaving school with agency and a love of learning prove it. Students ready to change the world for the better prove it. Change the 200-year-old model to go smaller, much smaller, and increase humanity exponentially. 

My thoughts exactly, stop demonizing new technology and find ways to make it work for you... A popular rhetoric I see amongst educators is that AI is going to destroy our children's minds we need to find ways to stop them from using AI 🤬 ... I say AI is giving our children access to tools and opportunities we can only dream of. So, embrace it and find ways to integrate it into your teaching strategy and methodology.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – IMPACT TO TEACHERS AND LEARNERS   Since its inception, the Artificial Intelligence has created a vast opportunity for writers, readers and content creators. A platform of creativity has been explored and it seems like nothing has been done, more grounds are yet to be touched.   Artificial intelligence has served teachers the role of generating an expansive means of teaching; by inserting two to five words in a tagline and letting Jarvis do the rest has been a positive ingredient in the food of thought for a growing child. It has also taken time to add not just new methods and concept of teaching to the educators but has been a beacon of learning for children.   Teachers have developed advance ways of delivering information to students; topics, subtopics that seemed incomprehensible for most students years past have been modified to the extent for a minor to take in. I mean one of the reasons I switched from sciences to arts was because I couldn’t comprehend or understand a topic in physics. Teachers have been able to devise a subtle means of making physics not just an interaction but a comical aspect of science; this is possible because learning has moved from oral-literal method of teaching to the present practical method which is mostly efficient and well received by students.

As technology advanced, calculators became more accessible and affordable. However, this shift was met with skepticism. Educators feared that students would become overly dependent on these devices, leading to a decline in basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some skeptiks argued that students needed to learn these fundamental skills without technological assistance to ensure they could think critically and solve problems independently. Despite the initial resistance, many have learnt that using calculators can enhance learning outcomes when integrated thoughtfully into the curriculum. The benefits include: 1. Increased Speed and Accuracy 2. Encouragement of Exploration 3. Fast preparation for Real-World Applications The same issues have been brought up regarding artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Let's embrace AI and move faster in this rat race as Zimbabwe.

These days HEIs are in lime light. Regulating agency UGC is announcing many innovations to facilitate revenue generation for universities which parents have to bear somehow. There is need for innovations which can facilitate students to earn while studying to give relief to their parents. Also there is a requirement of transformation of conventional examination system which is using note books and harming Nature. Paper notebooks might be replaced by e-note books and answers may be stored in central memory devices and can be examined by AI programs. This will eliminate human interference in assessment process and transparency will reflect in this sector. Also there is great progress in psychology and understanding of the mind. These advancements may be very beneficial in memory management which is a key thing in examination and ignored so far. My contention is that if memory management is included in curriculum at all levels then stress free learning will be possible practically and teaching/ learning will get new dimensions and scope of innovations would increase tremendously.
