Hibs' 5-0 loss to Aston Villa last night reflects the enormous gulf that has opened up between English and Scottish football. Below are the revenues for the two clubs, since the final pre-Premier League season. 1991/92: 3.4x difference Villa: £7.5m Hibs: £2.2m 2006/07: 5.4x difference Villa: £52.7m Hibs: £9.8m 2021/22: 15.0x difference Villa: £178.4m Hibs: £11.9m Broadcast revenue is the main reason for the difference; if Hibs were competing in the English pyramid, their revenues would be comparable to a bottom half Championship club. As it happens, Villa play Burnley this weekend - formerly of the Championship - whose revenues in each of the above seasons reads: £1.9m, £6.7m, and £125m. The finances reflect where these clubs are in Twenty First Group's World Super League ranking of teams globally: Aston Villa: 22nd Burnley: 64th Hibs: 938th (just above League One's Lincoln City)

Unless you’re Welsh, this years Six Nations competition has been one of the best for years. The old Italian underdogs have found some form and given more than one team a run for their money. Scotland have exceeded expectations with their performances and show real promise for the future with a growing squad. England, Ireland and France all put some fantastic shifts in, three well matched squads that kept us all on the edge of our seats. But the real lesson I’ve taken from this years tournament is “it ain’t over till it’s over”. Many of the matches this year have been decided in the dying moments. Some down to the very last seconds. It’s a reminder that a half time team talk is so important - and can completely change the course of a result. If you can reignite a fire, a passion and energy within a team; If you can regroup and refocus when you’re on the back foot and still find the strength to go again; If you can get back out there and fight for every last point, into the very last moments, then the results will follow. Matches decided by inches and seconds, marginal gains made up of grit, determination and teamwork. But at the final whistle, the message is still the same as it was at half time. Win or lose, it’s not about what you’ve done. It’s about what you do next. It’s the matches that finish. The game is never over.
