🗞 I started my advertising agency career at Carat, buying ads in local papers on behalf of clients such as Specsavers and Renault. It was a great grounding in media planning, client management, and negotiation skills. I then graduated to national press and magazines. Heady days filled with fraught phone calls and long lunches. So, it was interesting to see in the recent Thinkbox-commissioned study of advertising effectiveness that Print has the highest ROI (both short term and long term) of any channel. Short term ROIs - top 5 channels: 1. Print - £2.74 2. Audio - £2.47 3. Generic PPC - £2.29 4. TV + BVOD - £1.79 5. Online video - £1.76 (although note this is an average across all advertisers & sectors measured and also doesn't take into account scalability of each channel) It got me thinking about why Print, a medium which has been "dying" for over a decade, was the top performer. I came up with four reasons: 👴🏻 Audience - newspapers and magazines are still read, but by an older, and therefore likely to be, more affluent audience. More disposable income = greater ability to buy what's advertised 📉 Cost - there's probably been an overcorrection in cost to advertise, due to the declining circulations and tough negotiators from the media agency world! 📰 Format - a page ad in a newspaper or magazine takes up a significant portion of visual real estate. Also, a reader's dwell time is likely to be longer than for a social scroller 🤝 Trust - publishing giants still have significant clout and strong brands e.g. national newspapers front pages are reviewed daily on the BBC. Trusted titles = trust in the advertising contained within For me, digital channels like paid social and search still have the edge in terms of flexibility, more immediate measurement (albeit not always accurate) and lower cost of entry. However, from an advertising effectiveness point of view, it seems Print is in rude health.
