Pollinator Week June 17-23 Landscaping using native plants offers more than just visual appeal. A well-chosen combination of plants can enhance the soil quality of the solar farm by retaining groundwater, enriching the soil with nutrients, and offering a variety of grasses and forbs to support pollinators and reduce maintenance costs. #PollinatorWeek #nativeplants #erosioncontrol

Water is a complex entity, requiring a diverse range of ecological technologies to manage. Plants are the powerhouses and hosts of micro-ecologies that provide immeasurable value to water-based systems. In many cases, its the minutiae, hidden from the eye, that work around the clock, processing and metabolizing many human-made environmental impacts. In time, these wonderful floating gardens, become refugia as well as nuclei, from which aquatic and semi-aquatic species may colonize wetland banks, thus spreading their ecological services to neighbouring areas as a form of compound interest.
Fytogreens floating wetlands are floating modules planted with wetland species to add beauty, interest, offer significant water quality management benefits/capacity and provide a diverse habitat to all kinds of water bodies. Developed by horticulturists, so 100% of the module surface is capable of plant growth, Fytogreen have meet the growing demand for small scale floating wetlands with positive buoyancy. https://lnkd.in/gAMSUpbS #FloatingWetlands #watermanagement #watertreatmentsolutions #Fytogreen #floatinggardens #habitat #wetlands #waterquality #wildliferehabilitation

"Not only is maintaining green turf a poor use of water resources, it’s also just not good for the environment. Lawns are a monoculture, and they don’t support wildlife and the microorganisms that make up a healthy ecosystem. Then, there’s the issue of runoff." https://lnkd.in/gSGM6QXz #txwater #texaswater #atx #austintexas #gonative #nativeplants #waterconservation #plantnative

Really happy to see this paper published - it demonstrates that not all pollinators respond in the same way to features on Irish farmland. Across 29 sites in Wexford and Sligo, insects were sampled in relation to habitat features. We found fewer hoverflies on farms with fewer drainage ditches, more bumblebees when there were more grassy margins, drainage ditches and hedgerows, and more solitary bees when there was higher floral diversity. But within each group, species responded differently, so there is no "one size fits all" pollinator conservation solution for farmland. Conservation actions require understanding of different species needs. Bottom line - the quantity and diversity of essential habitats are important, along with the quality of those features to provide sufficient resources for pollinators. https://lnkd.in/eG8jEjZ3

VDOT will install 135 new acres of pollinator habitats this year as part of our ongoing commitment to protect the valuable ecosystem provided by pollinators such as bees, birds, butterflies, bats, beetles, flies, and more. Pollinator corridors assist VDOT in efficiently delivering a safe transportation system. Roadside vegetation reduces erosion and stormwater runoff while providing sediment control. With more flowers and vegetation, VDOT beautifies the roadsides and saves time and money by reducing how often it needs to mow areas along the roadways. Additionally, roadsides with healthy plant communities can better resist invasive plants that can require the use of herbicides. 🐝 Learn more about pollinator conservation: https://bit.ly/3RrEaGo

Have you ever heard of #NoMowMay? Although it may seem like a good idea, not mowing your lawn can do more harm than good. Rather than not mowing, we encourage you to support native biodiversity by planting native trees, shrubs, and flowers. Mindless plantation of #Mangroves can do more harm than good. In fact, planting some species in the wrong areas can be too damaging to the local ecosystems. We often associate pollinators with sunny, open fields and gardens, but in the East- many pollinators rely on and are adapted to living in forests. Forestland provides important habitat and resources for pollinators like host plants for butterflies and moths, spring ephemerals for pollen specialist bees and bumble bee queens in the spring, nesting habitat, and overwintering areas. Research shows that good forest management is good for pollinators. For example, bee numbers drop when the forest canopy starts to close but can increase with recent prescribed fire activity, and bee species diversity rises as nesting areas increase. A new study showed that managing for young forests and shrublands increases the amount of flowering plants and therefore supports the Monarch butterfly. Prescribed fire, timber management, controlling invasive plants and leaving woody debris and snags (dead trees), are all part in parcel of a solid forest stewardship plan, so if you are looking to better steward your forest to help pollinators, contact a local forester or the Stewardship staff!
