Thanks to Karen Chadwick for an important reminder to take care with emojis. People don't all translate them the same way. I'm not advising anyone to stop using them. Heck no. I like my emojis! 😎 Thought it called for one here! The key to using emojis is to be aware of their challenges. Misinterpretation is one as Karen shared a list of passive-aggressive emojis. Accessibility is another. Once upon a time, I used emojis as bullet points to add color to the post and readability. But it causes problems for screenreaders. I don't think anyone wants to hear the bullet said over and over. Happy face emoji point 1 ... happy face emoji point 2 and so on. And some emojis have long descriptions. Emojis. They're awesome when used wisely. For the sake of all things ... don't use a whole bunch in a bio, post, etc. Believe me ... these happen a lot and they're torture for many users. #Accessibility #Inclusion #MerylMots

🎥 Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: From Radio to Video 📺 "I don’t really want to make videos because I think I’ve a great face for radio!" 📻 That was my initial excuse, my 'get out of jail card,' when my coach challenged me to create a YouTube Channel. But guess what? He wasn't having any of it. So, reluctantly I took the plunge and got my face in front of a camera. (Check out my first video below, especially if you hate hearing the word NO! 😊) Now, three hundred videos later, I'll admit, I still feel a bit uneasy in front of the camera. My face, adorned with more lines and wrinkles, still seems more suited to radio. But here's the kicker: not one comment about my face! 🤷♂️ Instead, I've received heaps of positive feedback about the content of my videos. And that's the crux of it, isn't it? It's not about me; it's about making a difference. So, despite my discomfort, I continue to push past my own doubts and insecurities. Because if I can impact just one person today, then getting in front of that camera was undeniably worth it. But online harassment is more common than you'd expect. Cyberbullying hurts. If you feel attacked by someone, consider these ways to react: 1. Ignore and walk away: This cuts off the bully's power. 2. Take a break: Distract yourself and clear your head. 3. Don't retaliate: Responding can make things worse. 4. Block the bully: Cut off contact completely. 5. Stay safe online: Protect your accounts and personal info. I for one am fortunate to have thick skin. Like Water Off A Duck's Back, I won't give things a second thought the next day. Keep in mind, not everything falls under this concept; not all responses require an emoji or an exclamation point.
