The other day, I was donating blood at a Hema Quebec blood clinic, and I thought to myself: why don’t more people donate blood? Perhaps there’s a lack of encouragement and information about blood donations. While half of Canadians will need blood or know someone that will need blood at some point in their lives, only 4% of Canadians donate! This is a horrible statistic! Facts to consider: · The average, full grown human body has about 4.5 – 5.7 L of blood · A blood donation only takes 450 mL of blood · One donation can save up to three lives · Blood transfusions are needed to treat patients with serious injuries, surgeries, cancer treatments, and disorders such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia · Donating blood doesn’t hurt · The entire process of donating blood (including screening) takes an hour out of your day · The actual blood donation takes about 5-10 mins · You have to be 17 years old to donate in Canada (except Quebec where you have to be 18 years old) · There is no maximum age for donating blood · Giving blood reduces your risk of a heart attack (especially in men who tend to have higher iron levels) · Giving blood reduces stress · Giving blood screens you for multiple medical conditions · Giving blood is free Wherever you live, please check out the below websites to find a blood donor clinic near you: www.blood.ca/en https://lnkd.in/ehz__WGZ www.redcross.ca/ #héma-quebec #canadianbloodservices #redcross

Did you know that Canada ranks 13th in the world for deceased donor rates and 11th for living donor rates? Canada’s continued investment in donation activities such as mandatory referrals and donation physicians has improved donation rates to meet national and local system needs, but we must continue these efforts to become a world leader in this important field. Blood banks play a (crucial role) in our lives by collecting, testing, and storing blood donations . The first blood bank in the United States was established in 1936. Today, blood banks collect blood and separate it into its various components so they can be used most effectively according to the needs of the patient. Red blood cells carry oxygen, platelets help the blood clot, and plasma has specific proteins that allow proper regulation of coagulation and healing. Blood transfusions are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including anemia, cancer, and blood disorders. According to the American Red Cross, nearly 5 million people receive blood transfusions each year. Thanks to years of research, much progress has been made towards making transfusions safer and more effective. Blood banks also play a critical role in emergency situations, where timely access to blood can be the difference between life and death. Donating blood is a simple and safe process that can help save lives.
