People seeking definition of Systems Engineering are not fair to Systems Engineers. There is quite a time now that Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical Engineers, and (ouch!) Industrial Engineers stopped to ask and answer "what are you", "what do you do", and "describe your discipline" questions. Let's parse it a little bit. Systems Engineers (or Product Managers in the SW world) are those special people that talk to both engineers and customers/stakeholders/users/marketing/project managers. In many project, Systems Engineer is a name for a job that handles engineers for Project Managers. Project Systems Engineers (and their teams) must do what they must for the success of the project. Period. Now, there is a parallel talk about Systems Engineering as: 1. A licensed profession 2. An academic discipline 3. A tagline for selling services 4. A body of knowledge. Are these things practicing Systems Engineers worry about when dead tired late in the evening? No, they just want to do their job better with less effort. So, Systems Engineering as a profession, discipline, body of knowledge etc. value is measured by practicing Systems Engineers.
