#Mangrove Plantation Drive (The community Forest program): Reiterating it’s commitment towards the environment and empowerment of the underprivileged people, #HPL has planted over 30,000 mangroves in 2023-24 as a part of The Community Forest Program at #Sundarban in collaboration with Kolkata Society For Cultural Heritage (KSCH) . At the village of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali, Block- Gosaba, the program ran for a period of 4 and half months to complete cultivation and plantation process followed by 3 years of maintenance of the plants to yield the best result. During severe storms and #cyclones, the mangroves serve as a vital lifeline for the inhabitants of this region, protecting coastland by absorbing the energy of storm-driven waves and wind action, creating an effect of a natural breakwater. Mangroves also help to trap debris and silt, contributing to soil formation and stabilizing the coastline, control pollution etc. Over 1000 people (majorly women) from the villages of Sonagarh, Sajnekhali took part in this program and it also helped them generate income to sustain their livelihoods. We are committed to contribute more for environmental development in the days to come. #csr #hpl #mangroveplantation #sundarban #savetheenvironment #tcgfoundation #womenempowerment #poweringprogress

🌳 Afforestation is a powerful tool in combating heat waves, and Majuli, Assam, offers a remarkable example of its benefits. Majuli, the world's largest river island, faces severe erosion and climate challenges. However, innovative afforestation efforts have made a significant impact. In Majuli, projects like the Molai Forest, created by Jadav Payeng, demonstrate the transformative power of tree planting. Over several decades, Payeng single-handedly planted and nurtured a thriving forest on barren land, which now spans over 1,360 acres. This forest not only provides shade and reduces temperatures but also supports local wildlife, stabilizes soil, and enhances the ecosystem. Majuli's afforestation initiatives show that community-driven efforts can mitigate the effects of heat waves and climate change. By planting more trees, we can create cooler environments, reduce soil erosion, and improve air quality. Let's draw inspiration from Majuli and work together to promote afforestation in our communities. 🌱 #Afforestation #ClimateAction #MajuliAssam #BeatTheHeat #SustainableFuture #GreenPlanet #CommunityImpact #SDG

Addressing water scarcity with a sustainable solution in Kotri, Rajasthan Under the #AspirationalBlocksProgramme, a solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) plant was installed in Kotri village by a community-based organization called Manthan Sanstha. The project was then expanded to five surrounding villages, providing clean drinking water to villagers and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases. It was possible with the involvement of local communities, especially women, who are actively maintaining the plants. Earlier the villages near Rajasthan's Sambhar Salt Lake faced severe water scarcity due to high levels of fluoride and salt in groundwater sources. Rainwater harvesting plays a crucial role in northeastern India, addressing challenges posed by swift water runoff, limited retention capacity, and erratic precipitation patterns. This sustainable water management practice not only ensures a reliable water supply but also alleviates the burden traditionally borne by women in procuring water. Notably, local governments have recognized its significance and are actively promoting these initiatives. The implementation of rainwater harvesting systems promises to invigorate economic activities and agricultural productivity while fostering a thriving ecosystem for both flora and fauna. As the landscape becomes more verdant, the region's natural beauty will be enhanced, potentially bolstering its appeal as a tourist destination. To delve deeper into these vital issues, we cordially invite you to participate in the prestigious "North-East Water Conclave" Date: 25th July 2024 Venue: Guwahati, Assam This event presents an unparalleled opportunity to engage with experts and stakeholders in the field of water management. We urge you to secure your place at this enlightening gathering by registering now. While programs like the Swachh Bharat Mission have improved access, challenges remain, particularly in areas like Kalaburagi and Bengaluru’s slums, where open defecation persists. Key barriers include construction costs, water shortages, and cultural norms. Policy recommendations focus on increasing incentives, enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable usage, and implementing gender-sensitive solutions to ensure safe and equitable sanitation access for all. #sanitation #toliet #RURALSANITATION #UrbanSanitation #karnataka #ISEC Link: https://lnkd.in/gz9eYdFR

Transforming the Desert Landscape: A Community Water Source Success Story In the arid regions of Rajasthan, where water scarcity is a persistent challenge, one farmer's innovative initiative has emerged as a beacon of hope. Through sheer determination and community support, the farmer successfully constructed a lined pond, transforming barren land into a vital water source. Located in Champapur village, Tehsil Riya Badi, District Nagaur, Rajasthan, this 100 x 100 x 3 meter pond has become a lifeline for the local community. By capturing rainwater, the pond provides a sustainable and reliable source of water for irrigation, livestock, and domestic use. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the potential for sustainable agricultural practices in even the most challenging environments. It serves as an inspiration for others to embrace innovative solutions and contribute to the conservation of precious water resources. The project was supported by KVSSL with a grant of rupees 20,00,000/-. We commend the farmer for their vision, hard work, and commitment to sustainable development. #WaterHarvesting #RainwaterHarvesting #SustainableAgriculture #CommunityDevelopment #Rajasthan #India #WaterConservation

Our observations from the recent visit to our palm community: As we are almost at the end of Karupatti season, our palm climbers are winding up their annual cycle of working at the panangaadu(palm farms). We see the change every year as we face climate change. Though palm tree-related work is different from regular agriculture work, it is still hugely affected by the uncertainty in the monsoon and climate changes. For example, it's been raining heavily in and around Madurai for the last two weeks. This is not so normal to get this much rainfall during AADI. As a result, the wind directions changed, which can potentially affect the taste of pathaneer and karupatti! Interesting right? How the direction of the wind also matters as it has a huge role to play in the quality of the palm tree! We will share more in the next post #palmtree #coastalfarm #localfarms #climatechange #panai #palmclimbers #community

🌿 Poredom Village: A Hidden Gem Under Threat 🌿 Poredom, my beautiful village nestled on the outskirts of the Western Ghats in Chadayamangalam Grama Panchayath, Kollam District, Kerala, has long been a place of natural beauty and community-driven agriculture. The livelihoods of most of our residents are tied to the land — especially through rubber plantations and paddy fields. Despite having opportunities to work in urban areas or abroad, I chose to stay rooted in my beautiful village, Poredom, because I am deeply connected with the land and the people. My commitment is to advocate for the empowerment of my community and to protect Mother Nature. However, a new threat has emerged in the form of granite quarries, which now loom over our small hills and plantation lands. Currently, one quarry has started operations, and more than six others are in the process of being approved, which will impact over 75 hectares of our village’s precious plantation land. These quarry activities will severely harm the lives of around 2,800 people living nearby, destroying our environment, water sources, and the livelihoods of many who depend on agriculture. The rise of quarrying is not just an environmental issue — it’s a threat to our community’s future. In the next posts, I’ll share the devastating impacts of these quarries on both our environment and our people, and what we can do to fight back. Let’s protect Poredom. 💚 .Naji Mahfood Jaseel C K Ajas H Nahas Hareedktty #Sustainability #Environment #Quarrying #SavePoredom #WesternGhats #ClimateAction
