The necessity to improve speech therapy training arises from disparities between second-generation state educational standards for computerization and use of information resources, and the real state of the education system. Additionally, there is a growing number of children with speech disorders, often complicated by secondary disorders. A deep historical study of the development of speech therapy training is key to understanding and improving modern educational processes, considering socio-economic, cultural, and technological factors that shape the needs and directions of speech therapy development in the future. The article highlights the history of the development of the national speech therapy education system, revealing its connection with the socio-economic structure of the country, global historical-pedagogical processes, and the level of development of defectology science. The analysis of scientific literature allows identifying general conditions for the modernization of speech therapy education, confirming that based on an in-depth study of the content and essence of the problem of forming professionalism and professional competence of future speech therapists, it is possible to develop organizational and methodical support for their development and implementation in educational and production practice according to socio-economic conditions. This article emphasizes the importance of a deep analysis of historical and modern aspects in the training of speech therapists, taking into account socio-cultural changes and technological development. Our speech pathologists had a productive discussion in our group clinical supervision session today on involving parents in therapy sessions! While we see clients for about an hour at a time, parents spend countless hours with their children each week. By supporting parents to implement our strategies at home, we significantly enhance client outcomes. Our external clinical mentor guided our team discussion, sharing strategies to educate parents and adjust their expectations of therapy. It's not just about therapist-child communication; it's about teaching parents to foster language development through play and in everyday routines and environments. Research proves that parent-led interventions are most effective for enhancing children's communication skills. Discussing this as a team helps our speech pathologists feel empowered to apply these methods with their clients and problem solve as a group any existing barriers in being able to implement this evidence-based approach to come up with solutions to go and try in their practice. #speechpathology #teamwork #clientoutcomes #languagedevelopment

🎉 Yesterday, Razi Zarchy, SLPD, CCC-SLP and I found out a publication finally came out! 🎉 More good academic news today! Back in October, we applied for President Wood’s Research Enhanced Support Grant. Today, we found out we received this award! 💰 How much??? I’m sure that’s the question on many people’s minds. Well, this wasn’t an award that comes with cash money but for the Fall 2024 semester, we will each receive 3 units of assigned time, which means teaching one less class, freeing up time to focus on this project. 📜 So, what’s the project? We will be offering our first *in person* ASL at Home class through the Sac State Maryjane Reese Language Speech and Hearing Clinic. This will be a 12-week class following the Clinic schedule. Four graduate students studying to become speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will receive training on our curriculum and gain experience teaching families in the class about facilitative language techniques. Four undergraduate students in Deaf Studies will gain experience working directly with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children while their parents attend class. ✍🏼 It’s called a “research enhancement support grant”; where’s the research? Good question! We will work on submitting a proposal to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) so that we can survey participants on their self-perceived ASL abilities, ASL use, ease of communication with their deaf child, communication self-efficacy, and perceptions of deafness before and after the class. Every time someone asks me what I do and I respond with 'I'm a Speech Pathologist,' I often get the same response: 'Oh, my child saw a speech pathologist. She just played with him.' But let me tell you, that couldn't be further from the truth. A play session is like a workout for a speechie, and let's be honest, a child who can do structured activities at the table is soooo much easier... Play sessions with a child is like an iceberg – what yousee is just the tip of the iceberg! So above the surface, it looks like your child and the speechie are just playing games or having fun. But underneath, there's a whole lot more going on. 🚀 💥 First off, there's a tonne of planning involved. The speech pathologist has to carefully choose activities and toys that target specific speech and language goals for your child. It's like plotting a course on a treasure map! 🗺️ Then there's all the skill-building happening behind the scenes. Your child might be working on everything from engagement, copying, sounds, first words, vocabulary building, grammar to social thinking. It's like they're training to be communication super stars! ✨ And let's not forget about engagement. The therapist is like a master magician, keeping your child focused and motivated throughout the session. Normally this starts with the therapist matching or changing their own energy levels to help your child get the most out of their session. It's all about making learning feel like fun! 🎩 So next time you see your child playing with their speech pathologist, remember: there's a whole iceberg of skills and planning beneath the surface.
