Virginia Long Bridge South Package Contract Awarded! 🚆 Exciting news from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA)! The design-build contract for the Long Bridge Project – South Package has been awarded to a powerhouse joint venture including Wagman, PJ Dick - Trumbull - Lindy, S&B USA Construction & Fay, with STV as the lead designer. This ambitious $2.3 billion initiative will transform rail infrastructure by separating passenger and freight traffic along a vital 1.8-mile corridor between Washington, D.C., and Arlington, VA. As part of the Transforming Rail in Virginia program, this is the largest project of its kind and a key step toward expanded Virginia Railway Express services. South Package Highlights: 📌 Construction of a two-track railroad bridge over the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Potomac River. Addition of a bicycle-pedestrian bridge, enhancing multimodal transit. New retaining walls, embankments, and a fender system for the Potomac River Navigational Channel.

Network Rail invests £33 million to stabilise a critical section of the East Coast Main Line 🚧 Near Browney Curve in Durham, engineers have been working since September 2023 to address ongoing land movement that could lead to major disruptions in passenger and freight services due to landslips. 🔧 Key project highlights: Pile Installation: 529 piles, up to 25 meters deep, are being driven into the ground. The 400th pile has already been installed! Drainage Improvements: Enhanced drainage systems are being implemented to prevent waterlogging. Embankment Reshaping: The embankment is being widened and regraded for improved stability. Environmental Measures: New trees and wildflower meadows are being planted to help stabilise the ground. The project is now 75% complete and is expected to wrap up this autumn, with final land reshaping continuing until spring 2025. The work is being carried out in collaboration with contractor Story, with piling progressing at six piles per day. 🛤️ Jon Calvert, Network Rail’s portfolio delivery director, stated: "Keeping the railway running safely and smoothly is what we’re here to do, and it’s paramount for us to take proactive action like here at Browney Curve to prevent problems before they happen. This is a mammoth worksite, the largest of its kind in Network Rail’s Eastern region, and our engineers are working tirelessly to secure the East Coast Main Line for the future. It’s a huge achievement to have done this while causing minimal disruption to this vital rail route, which will soon be better protected for passengers and freight for years to come."

An exciting update for the $2.3bn Long Bridge Project!   The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) has finalized its team for the project, a game-changing initiative to expand rail capacity and improve travel in the region.   The south package contract was awarded to Long Bridge Rail Partners, a joint venture including PJ Dick - Trumbull - Lindy, S&B USA Construction & Fay, and Wagman, with STV as lead designer. The north package is led by Skanska and Flatiron Construction.   This project will: - Add a new two-track rail bridge over the Potomac. - Build a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. - Relieve congestion on the existing bridge, which operates at 98% capacity during peak hours.   With completion targeted for 2030, this project will enhance service for CSX, Amtrak, and VRE passengers, paving the way for more frequent and reliable travel.   Article link in the comments.

BIG news! We’re advancing the Sawtooth Bridges Replacement Project with two key contracts announced this week.   A Skanska, The Walsh Group - Walsh Construction & Archer Western and Herzog Joint Venture will conduct pre-construction activities along with future contract opportunities for the project’s full construction scope, and an AECOM STV Joint Venture will serve as PM/CM!   This critical state-of-good-repair investment will construct multiple bridge structures with four total tracks, replacing the existing aging asset and significantly enhancing capacity, reliability, and speed along the most heavily traveled segment of the NEC. We’re making strides to address decades of underinvestment as we rebuild America’s Railroad for the next generation.
